Performance under extreme temperature

Post by -S.L- » Wed Jan 29, 2020 12:38 pm

Hello

Quick question, which might sounds silly but, how a eurorack system will handle an outdoor performance under the sun, let's say 30/35 degres Celcius (86/95 F)

Anybody experienced such a thing ? I'm not involving analog VCO that might drift, since it's all digital VCO's. But in terms of heat in the case (for instance, Doepfer monster cases).

Will that blow up :despair: or it should do fine ? :hmm:

I would say it depends on how long the performance is to last and whether or not the case will be in direct sunlight.

let's say about 1h15, direct sun light (almost, as it's sunset time)

Last summer I spent hours recording some synth stuff by 38ish °C for two days in the sun, in the middle of a white stone quarry. I had a black 6u filled with black modules, my friends had some Dreadbox synths, etc. One of my friends even passed out from the heat while we played.

The synths were fine. They got hot at times and regular breaks are necessary but if you only take them out to play for an hour, I'd say that based from my experience you should be OK and your modules too. You obviously don't want to subject them to such situations frequently, and I obviously don't take any responsability for what you'll do, but even my Verbos modules survived without needing repair afterwards so...

Keep it out of the sun as long as possible, and then cover it with a blanket until you play. And try to keep the modules out of direct sun, particularly any with screens.

You should be fine, but that will minimize any potential issues.
