Perhaps I need to take a break

Post by windchill » Mon Jun 15, 2020 10:04 am

My fridge has started sounding like Eliane Radigue.
It's lovely... but I'm wondering if I need to take a break from modular for a while ;)

:hmm: fridges are ok, but washing machines are where the real musical action is imho.

Pauline Oliveros was a connoisseur of refrigerator sounds. You're just experiencing a heightened awareness.

Actually it's more serious than I thought.
I just went to record it (madness surely!) and it turns out it's not the fridge.
The contents of my kitchen are somehow generating a complex drone but I can't locate the source.

If an common object ticles your fancy sonically, why not use it. Then recombine and progress.

... it's that three week old open can of tuna sitting in the back of the bottom shelf in the fridgitator ... the critters growing in it are calling out for rebellion .... that's what you're hearing. Or just bad drugs. In fact, yea ... bad drugs. The sign sad "don't eat the brown acid" ... and what did you do? .. you ate the brown acid. Now your fridge is talking to you. This is what you want, this is what you get.

I just bought a new washing machine last week and one of the first things i noticed is its got a pleasant lofi droney sound. That would not have happened before i got into synths. The other thing that stood out, it was cheaper than most modules.

Similar but different - In the wintertime I have to tune bass drones to my central heating boiler.
Is it finished?

After posting the above i went on youtube and clicked on Hainbachs new Fundamental Test Equipment VST video. It started with the video below. I thought it was the Hainbach intro. After 5 or 10 seconds i realised it was an advert. No idea why i would get this advert either. I have been listening to a lot of the stuff on the Looking for extreme minimalism thread recently and it does seem to have an influence.

funny,
the hum of a mini fridge inspired the melody for a track, back when I had some talent and motivation ;)

I noticed when I was in Berlin that the subway has a weird PWM sound when the train is going. Something in the electrics.

Lovely^

There's a ton of Matrix printer music out there, including this musically slightly less wonderful example. Despite the chosen song quite an accomplishment.

P.s. I like the sound palette of a Matrix printer.

Many years ago we would go to a cabin in the mountains that had an OLD fridge. When it shut off vapor would percolate up the radiator in the back, it would cause this wonderful ringing. We called it the freon harp. Had a constrained pitch sequence with a random pattern that would gradually slow and go silent. Still can't sequence that well, probably should off the synths and buy more wind chimes.....

Several years ago I released a short album where every track was based on refrigerator samples. One of them also included samples from a documentary about John Gorrie aka "the Fever Man."

I was playing with a loop for my full length last night and letting it play in the background to get a vibe while I did my daily Duolingo lessons... that sound... when you get something right within the Duolingo app fit perfectly on a chord change. So I recreated it with the MS20 and it sounds awesome haha! Sometimes, just go with the flow.

In the '90s I worked in an office with a copy room that contained three very large photocopy machines, each one of which could produce hundreds (if not thousands) of copies of multi-page documents, including collating and stapling them. During the week or two before we attended the Consumer Electronics Show all three machines were running for hours on end, producing some incredibly complex rhythmic patterns that would slowly morph over time as the machines went into and out of sync with each other. For decades I've been kicking myself for never bringing a portable recorder into that room and recording it all.

My stepdad and I had the same year/model Harleys in the 1980s (FXRS and FXRT). Both bikes were geared identically, same model/make/size rear tires, and we rode side by side most of the time. Many times both engines would be nearly perfectly sync'd up (rpm) ... the beating drone sounded remarkably like a pair of VCOs tuned to unison.

Similarly, I spent a few hours in C130 Hercules while in the military. Those have four turbo prop engines, the props are actually louder than the turbine engines that spin them. When all four engines are sync'd up at altitude there is this wonderful "four VCO" drone.

The ~beating~ comes and goes as the engines are never perfectly sync'd up ... this is true with the Harley engines and the C130 turboprop engines, alike. The difference between VCOs and engines is that with the engines you literally feel the droning, sync/unsync, beating in your ribcage and your spine which deeply enhances the experience.
