Roland Kuit Laboratory of Patching

Post by JeshuaW » Sat Oct 19, 2013 11:28 pm

Has anyone bought this E-Book?

Laboratory of Patching

I feel as if this could be the secret sauce to making some really crazy patches and gaining a higher understanding of individual modules.

What do you guys think?

Yeah it's not cheap by any means... On the level of expensive academic text book. It would be cool to find someone on here who's read it and to see what they think.

It's just hard to swallow it at that price because I could be expanding my modular system instead...

210€ and it's a download.... Not even a real book... My texts book at university weren't so expansive even those ordered from us... :despair:

It actually looks quite amazing, but I couldn't face the hours in front of the computer, I do enough of that as it is.

Roland is a very knowledgeable guy. He has been very active in the Nord Modular community since it started, is trained as an electronic composer at the Institute of Sonology, and he makes great music. We have bought the book for our university studios, but I haven't had time to dig in yet.

I invited him here for a guest lecture and performance last year, and he did a great set!

So, my guess is it is worth it, even though it is quite expensive.

I will explain the price. When I started to sell SoundLab I, that price was crazy and in no comparison of the time I had put into this. When I got an agent, he wanted me to sell it for E200! So it ended updated! for E110(more than 650 patches). So now with more than 700! patches,17 Euro cent per patch and 2 years daily based research, I think this(E125)is a more than fair prize. Considering what you will learn.

I have Roland Kuit's earlier e-Book, Sound Lab I. I thought it was worth the money.

I'll probably invest in Laboratory of Patching at some point, since I get a discount for owning Sound Lab 1. Yeah, it's an expensive eBook, but it also comes with load and loads and loads of example patches that you can mess around with - by playing with an example patch, you get a better understanding of the concept he's trying to teach than just sitting there and reading about it.

The classic Allan Strange text on synthesis goes for crazy money these days - and no example patches either.

I'm interested, are all patch examples that come with Lab, 100% compatible with standalone G2 Software (either original Demo or patched by Joshy)? As even in patched version, some stuff doesn't work afaik (DX operator, audio input, also having multivoice in patch etc.)

Also would like to hear more impressions and stories, how book helps you? Do you use knowledge from it with nord modulars, other digital modulars, or implement it on your hardware modular?

I reviewed his album "Sonic Forms" in issue two of my zine. He is definitely a serious dude.
