ADDAC 506 Stochastic Audio

Post by panda » Fri Jul 03, 2020 12:22 pm

What setting does the ADDAC 506 need to get the output in the audio range?
Thanks.

Set envelope rate to fast/center position with rise and fall close to minimum. Pretty easy to dial in some nice tones from there.

Thanks. I was missing the close to minimum part.

Has anyone spent some time with this one? I'm thinking it'd be great as an alternative to the buchla-style random (with the expander, that is).

I realize this comes six months after your question, but yes, I have the 506 and 506B. As to Buchla-style random, I don't have a Source of Uncertainty type of random. My closest point of reference is a Serge-style random, namely the SSF Ultra-Random Analog. The 506+506B combination, by themselves, do perform this function, yes. However, I have a noise source nearby (Nano Rand v2) that I personally find gives the 506 a more animated, less regular momentum coming out of the random voltages of the 506B. I could play with the 506/506B more but this is my impression thus far: if you want more varied voltages in your randomness, it works better with an external source of noise to work from, kind of like a sample & hold.

Thanks for the reply! I've since added to my rack and really feel it's the style of random that suits my patching the best. The rise/ fall values on the expander are really great for making me think beyond the starting line of a patch.
