What's Brian Eno Playing?

Post by Knights Who Say Neve » Sat Nov 21, 2020 2:00 am

Here's Eno wearing an outfit that Lady Gaga probably stole 40 years later, playing...what exactly? An EMS Synthi with other stuff added?

Video starts at the best view of it (4:00):

Space and time contain a manifold of pure a priori intuition, but at the same time are conditions of the receptivity of our mind- conditions under which alone it can receive representations of other objects, and which therefore must also always affect the concept of these objects. But if this manifold is to be known, the spontaneity of our thought requires that it be gone thorough in a certain way, taken up and connected. This act I name synthesis. -Kant

Someone asked essentially the same thing here years ago. Yes, it’s a custom rig based around an EMS Synthi. See the posts by Graham Hinton in this thread for more details:

So-maybe not “made by EMS”, but seems likely to include at least some parts of their synths.
Full list of everything in there may remain a mystery...

if you're on the FB EMS group there was a more detailed post about it, I can't remember the details.

You can only hear it in the last 2 seconds - not adding much it has to be said.
Andy Mackay very fetching though.

I'd rather like to know what he's playing now. There are some great sounds on "The Ship", which are very reminiscent of MI Elements, but I suspect that he's gone over to the dark side of VSTs . . .

Recopied from the thread that nostalghia metioned:

I've just been having a long chat with Gerry Rodgers and he told me the story of Eno's custom synthesizer. It was Gerry who designed and built it, as I suspected, and it comprised a 6 channel RSE input mixer, a Synthi pcb card set, an FX send/return section and a 4 octave keyboard.

After Eno had it a little while his roadie managed to connect mains to an audio input and blew it up. By the time Gerry had rebuilt it Eno was no longer interested and it went into storage at some factory. Years later he asked Eno again if he wanted it and this time he did, but when Gerry went to retrieve it he found that it had been chucked out into a skip.

Gerry ran the factory that built the early VCS3s and Synthi As for EMS. His brother Brian designed the Synthi A case and the Synthi 100 (the latter against his better judgement). Very interesting guys, full of good stories.

Did Brian Eno write the music that was in the book The Little Prince?

I believe this to be the case. Although I think The Ship is one of the best things he's ever done I generally prefer him when "real" instruments are being played. Small Craft on a Milk Sea and High Life with Karl Hyde are stand-outs.
Is it finished?

Was listening to an interview with him the other week on film music when he referenced one commission he completed using just Absynth.

I think he’s been using mostly software synths for some time now.

Agreed, on all points.

Not to derail, but can we take a moment to appreciate how fabulous everyone, especially Eno, is in this video :

A Synthi-looking-something VCS3 makes quite an appearance in this song and video around the 0:50 and 4:30 marks.

I wasn't really interested in music at all until I saw that Ladytron performance. Soon bought the first Roxy LP I found, which was For Your Pleasure. Ladytron wasn't on that of course so I had to wait until I found the first album (not much stock by non-pop acts in my hick town). Was gutted when Eno left. Stranded had its moments (especially Mother of Pearl/Sunset) but I lost interest in Roxy after that.

Not sure, but he di work on:

Ina Land of Clear Colours - Narration: Peter Sinfield/Music: Brian Eno/ Illustrations: Leonor Quiles/ Story: Robert Sheckley

Eno used preemptive themes from Apollo and On Land for this little recording. They were raw quite analog versions. A lot of EMS birds and whatnot. Not a whole lot to write home about. I have the cd - nice to complete my collection, but seriously not at $60.00 USD these days. Good story to go to sleep to or get a massage.
