I used to be into death metal when I was a wee boy, but I'm much more into grindcore and sludge/doom/stoner/whatever-the-fuck-its-name-is-this-week. There's some overlap some times though

Fun fact: Takafumi Matsubara, the guitarist for Gridlink, was in this band for a short time (I believe it was around the time he suffered a brain infection, sadly). Quite a stark contrast.

Criminally underrated band, and easily some of the heaviest music I've ever heard. Sitting through either of their albums feels like having a giant block of lead laying on your chest.

Going strictly by the legacy, I'd say Death they were the progenitors of Death metal and should surely be the "greatest death metal band" IMO.

Full disclosure, I'm not a huge death metal fan, but.... these are probably my two favorite:

Atheist

Death

special mention to the local boys (well I moved recently, so not local to me anymore) Cephalic Carnage

ps Mithras is a nice change from the standard approach to dm.
I love the HM-2!! Left Hand Path may be my favorite record :deadbanana:

Blood Incantation is nice (almost feels like Miles Davis) but I've never heard anything like that :

I haven't listenend to metal a lot the past 25 years but I just had to take a listen to the new Possessed album. And wow, just for the vocals I would actually buy it. Jeff has been one of my all-time favourite metal vocalists and he doesn't disappoint here, such an EVIL sounding voice. :sb:

It's funny, but in this video, the vocals are what I like the least. On the other hand, the guitar line that comes in around 1:33 that sounds like a sped up version of Raining Blood- I need more of that :)

Really? Well, maybe I'm a bit prejudiced. Possessed has always been one of my favourite metal bands and that was mainly because of Jeff's vocals. This album sounds just like almost no time has past since this and the Eyes of horror. The instrumental part I find a bit harder to come to grips with. But maybe that's because I haven't listened to this kind of metal for quite some time. Most of the stuff I like is from when I started to listen to metal (around '85) up until about '92. There is a lot that changed production-wise since then also and, as far as I'm concerned, not for the better. I miss the human element in the playing, it sometimes sounds too robotic.

Nothing beats 'Mental Funeral' for me... Favorite newer band is Anatomia.
