Picked up the new Meshuggah album the other day. My walls no longer have paint on them. What a brutal masterpiece.

I've been in a shitty mood for weeks and I'm taking advantage of some free time to listen to Meshuggah tonight with the lyrics up so I can finally figure out what the fuck Jens is screaming about. Now that I've learned how to hear his words I'm pretty certain I'll never vote for another band but Meshuggah for "best metal band."

These days I'd put my list something like:

1. Meshuggah - Rhythmic metal with complex time signatures. Complex, nuanced lyrics. The singer is a screamer and hard to understand, but he's so fucking metal, and what he's saying is real. Meshuggah is brilliant in their use of silence - for very long stretches, the screaming stops; the band is so tight, they navigate extremely complex rhythmic sequences in which there are blissful voids of silence lasting only fractions of a second; they do not over-emphasize their lyrics, because they know their riffs are insane). Koloss, Nothing and I are my picks for their best work.

2. Decapitated - Signature, badass singer SAURON had to quit. Drummer got fucking killed (a horrible tragedy). They have layers of tragedy to go with their incredible sound. Their recent work has been slowly worming its way into my skull, until I'm enslaved. Decapitated is challenging music.

3. Nile - Academics with intense instrumental skills, the best metal singer PERIOD, badass lyrics. Annihilation of the Wicked, Ithyphylactic, Those Whom the Gods Detest - take your pick. Their new album is absolute shit, which would be disappointing if these guys hadn't already accomplished an extraordinary amount.

4. Aeon - These guys have a problem with Christians. If you don't want to listen to guys sing about killing door-to-door missionaries ("If you come here again I will crush your head against the wall"), observations about pedophile priests:

How can you stand there and preach about life
while crushing a defenceless child
Touching young children and even your own
Priest bastard I want you dead

If you can deal with all that, basically a sort of "gangsta satanist metal" stupidity, then you can enjoy Aeon's badass tone. Their vocalist is one of the most diabolically badass ever. I see them as pushing the envelope of sacrilege, saying the sort of things that will be most virulently offensive to the people they find virulently offensive to themselves. As someone who loathes religious fundamentalism and exceptionalism, I'm a consumer of Aeon's products.

5. Slayer
6. Death

suboptimal Meshuggah sure is a legend, right now tons of bands are picking up what Meshuggah invented years ago. Catch 33 was my favorite when i listened to them. "Nothing" deserves credit as well, i think they about started using 8-string guitars back then and mastered it straight from the beginning:

The best ever death metal band out of Denton
never settled on a name
but the top three contenders
after weeks of debate
were "Satan's Fingers" and "The Killers" and "The Hospital Bombers"

My picks for best DM albums (Ipossibly not death metal in the strictest sense):

Carcass -- Heartwork
Impaled -- The Dead Shall Dead Remain
Mortician -- Hacked up for Barbecue
Cephalic Carnage -- Lucid Interval

I've said it before, but I'm amazed at the metal community on a synth site! I'm starting to realize that there are tons of electronic musicians out there heavily influenced by metal. Very cool!

One more note:

Anyone on here do Maryland Deathfest? If so, maybe we can arrange a Muffwiggler meetup.

The first four albums DEFINE death metal.

Now close this thread.
Oh yes yes yes... Indeed, old quote but new wiggler here and had to post. Kind of my first proper post really ha!, and re death metal.
Morbid Angel, what power, what dynamic, my God.
As someone relatively new to modular synthesis I inherently take much inspiration from these loves of old, and tend to delve into the exploration of 'heavier sounds' if that makes. Any sense.,and as a metaller and guitarist at heart, first discovering the true power, inspiration in riffing and ultimate sonic heaviness in bands like morbid angel, carcass, deicide, cannibal corpse, and then later, the revelation that is the almighty Meshuggah, back in the early nineties when I was still at school, truly set the basis to which my sound pallette was to build upon, and indeed the music that was to inspire me. Once was, always is. And now I have found modular. And again I find myself breathing to myself 'my god'... So thanks for the discovery of this forum, thanks to all those whom I have read posts from and hey, for the revelation that I should type death metal into the search function and yield such results.. Much love.

The first 3 Morbid Angel records are about as good as it gets for me.

Then there's Incantation and Portal.
