Vastum - the hole below was one of my fav DM releases last year. And the band has some understandable controversy, but Disma's Towards the Megalith is a fucking masterclass in DM guitar tone - somehow sounds like flesh rotting off the bone.

The title of this thread is an oxymoron.

I ran across Obscure Sphinx's Void Mother album the other day and would recommend it. The vocalist is metal as fuck.

there`s loads of really sophisticated and experimental stuff in death as well..
for example i really dig ulcerate from new zealand, horribly complex song structures and composition, incredible drummer and they still don`t sound "lifeless" and sterile like most technical death bands do...
don`t like the vocals though but still love the project. they`re also incredible live...

If I could only have one death metal album, this would be it. (also with Steve Digiorgio on bass by the way)

Portal from Australia is also a very weird and horrifying experimental DM act:

as is Ritual Necromancy:

The only death metal I can listen to it and it's so interesting under so many aspects, most of all the music itself. Chuck Schuldiner was really a genius.

bit of a tragic story really. guy must have sold quite some records, but still probably ripped off by the record labels.

on a side note, Cynic is quite similar to the later Death albums trying to incorporate a bit of jazz fusion into death metal.

Definitely. Even though let's consider that even if the band was successful it was still a pretty niche market. What's great is that got support from a lot of fellow musicians, but unfortunately it wasn't enough.

I've distractedly listened to Cynic in the past, but it didn't leave a trace in my mind. I'll try again.
