Exceptional rap...

Post by onthebandwagon » Tue Dec 10, 2019 4:13 pm

I don’t want to start a polarizing discussion about one might not like 99% of rap out there but rather share some that who are in that group does like. A few albums I just recently discovered or re-discovered are below (no need to mention Wu-Tang, obviously). Yes son, I am down.

Three 6 Mafia — Mystic Stylez
Scar Face — The Diary
Sensational — Loaded With Power

Not the Sensational track I wanted to post but couldn’t find others. The album is a bit sleepy but I appreciate that made in the bedroom quality it has.

I’ve always loved Jay Electronicas “Exhibit a”

Apparently one of the first rap tracks to talk about depression...

Always appreciated the vulnerability of that one. Love how it shows how mentally taxing it is to be a tough guy rather than the typical glorifying.

And this one came the next year with the lyric "Damn I wish I wasn't such a wimp"

Absolutely and you can see it run through Wu-Tang’s C.R.E.A.M. which came out a couple years later:

“Though I don't know why I chose to smoke sess
I guess that's the time when I'm not depressed
But I'm still depressed, and I ask what's it worth?”

I didn’t see your link before replying, funny...I remember listening to them and this post hardcore band the Far Side. Nearly forgot about both.

This is my favourite and I've opened many DJ sets with it (shamelessly influenced by Andrea Parker's DJ Kicks mix, although on her mix it's track 2).

This is always going to be near the top of my list. The interaction between them and the production by El-P is great all across the record. The imagery in the last verse is pretty powerful.

This is good too. I like how they flip the whole bragging about your misdemeanors thing on it's head.

I jump between that and Stress Rap from the same record. Nice and claustrophobic.

Heard it for the first time this morning...knew I was in for something special when I heard the Waking Life samples. Wonder what that’s bubbling bass is from.

Are we allowed to get risqué and veer dangerously close to the territory of "degenerate modern kiddie styles" but that you will notice is on a much higher level of skill and artistry than the aforementioned kiddie styles if you are able to pay attention without being instantly turned off by the aesthtic? :hihi:

The Coup has been consistently great for more than 2 decades.
