This is not the place I'd imagined it to be.

Just heard that myself. DAMN! I've been a wannabe drummer for about 45 years now (have a real nice V-Drum kit) and have always regarded Neil as a drum god. I know some people don't think he was that great and to each his own. Neil and Rush has had a great influence on many people the world around. Very said and shocking news. <RIP> Neil Drum on :drums:

Horrible news. And from brain cancer. Ugh. While I wasn’t a Rush super fan, they are one of those bands that I regard as utterly incredible musicians coming together, and making incredible music.

Drum speed Neil!

I saw them in 87 or 88 first time. Always a great show. Didn't Neal mostly write their lyrics, too?

Yes Neal wrote most the lyrics and several books. I never had a chance to see Rush anytime they were here.

"Some are born to move the world
to live their fantasies
but most of us just dream about
the things we'd like to be
Sadder still to watch it die
than never to have known it
For you the blind who once could see
the bells tolls for thee..."

Heard about this as soon as it was announced. Not a drummer myself, but a big Rush fan since my teens (one of the first albums I ever owned was Presto, which is still one of my favorites). A truly great musician in so many ways.

It never fails to amaze me how the guy could play with a level of precision and control that would be the envy of any drum machine, but never sound rote or mechanical or lack that fundamental human energy. A true legend.

Very sad to read this yesterday. RIP Neil.
My favourite work of his has always been the early/mid 1980s stuff.

Saw them live in 2003. Very sad, he will be missed.

Heard the news while driving in my car. Had to pull over to the shoulder to digest the news. So sad!

We've lost 2 of my favorite drummers recently...Ginger Baker and now Neil.

RIP Neil.

did they play the 2112 overture at any of those shows? i saw them play it once - i think it was the presto tour (but it also could have been 'hold your fire' - alas, my concert memories tend to blur together). it was amazing!

anyways, r.i.p. neil peart :drums:

cheers

Peart was never satisfied with simply being what he was, he always wanted to be better; always wanted to learn more. He never stopped studying the drums, looking for something new. He was the ultimate drum student, and this is why is playing always sounded fresh, from 1974 all the way through 2015. His thirst for knowledge should be an example to all; it is the thing about him that influences me the most.

RIP, Neil. :waah:

Oh my, it was so long ago. I can't remember if I'd even gotten my 1st synth by then! :youkids:

I'd STILL bet that they played the overture+temples of syrinx at all of them, though. Nobody would let them leave if they hadn't!
Set position was the opener of the 2nd encore/ender medley.

This indeed hurts.

My first Rock band.

My utmost, deep-founded respect to him and the ones left behind.

Top 15 drummer and lyricist.

Great speaking voice. He should have sang.

Saw Rush in1980 and 1981. Both at the Forum in Los Angeles. Still have the cheap overpriced jersey from 1980.

I love the intimacy of the one long Rush documentary. Him coming back after a lot of life happening is something I am in awe of.
