And just about any variant of "Moon in June" you care to mention.

Sea Song is one of my many favorites.

Since Sea Song was already mentioned:

Do "songs while he was still with Soft Machine" count?

If yes => Moon in June  .

The versions on "Third" and on "Peel Sessions" both count ;).
... why buy it for $100 when you can build it yourself for $150?

Take it you've heard the original demo when he was still working it all out?

Actually, I haven't :w00t: ! Gotta listen to that soon, thanks for the hint!

Edit Jan 18, evening (CET): Just bought the album on Bandcamp after listening briefly which gave me goosebumps. Thanks again!

Another for Moon in June. (and thanks for the link to the demo!)
I have a friend who grew up in Twickenham, West London and the neighbour was Robert. My friend and his sister often went over and played in their garden. This must've been before Robert's accident. Lovely row of early Victorian houses going right down to the Thames and a nice pub on the corner..

I prefer his post accident material, something about the frailty and perseverance in it, and total humility... find it very moving at its best, but generally only listen to track here or there off various albums, I find it hard to them as a whole, a bit depressing and monotonous.

Wow that early version of Moon in June is amazing - fresh and crunchy.
(I wonder if that was done on an 8 track or a 4 with some overdubs).
I first heard Third 49 years ago - still love the whole album. :sb:

I think it was probably recorded at the Record Plant in New York which Wikipedia says was 12 track at that time. I think these sessions were done after they recorded their first LP and at the end of their US tour. Hendrix had the studio booked out but let him use it for these sessions and even played bass on one of them. There's also a great version of Rivmic Melodies from this same set where you can pretty much hear him working out most of what became the first side of the second LP.

Third has a very special place in my heart also.

(edit: Apparently some of it was done at TTG in LA - again during a Hendrix booking - which was 16 track. https://www.discogs.com/Robert-Wyatt-68/release/4920446)

Oh shit. I have that Ultramarine album and the Soft Machine one it's sampled from and I never put 2 and 2 together. They completely changed the feel and timing of the vocals. It also sounds like they removed some sort of Leslie type effect. And if you're allowed to do that I'm allowed to do this. Criminally underrated band:

Initiate the sequence, create catastrophe.

Little Red Riding Hood Hit the Road

I wasn't much aware of Robert Wyatt when I walked into my local record shop (some years ago now) and that was playing. Walked up to the counter, pointed to the speakers and said, "I'll have that, thanks." Also happened with the Be Good Tanyas' first album. True story.

Are you sure you didn’t assume that memory from something you saw in High Fidelity?

I love everything about the poem Ivor Cutler starts reading half way through... always puts a smile on my face.

Yup. Haven't read/watched High Fidelity (but I know what it is).

I actually saw Ivor Cutler live even longer ago. Don't remember much about it. I'd had sherry for breakfast.

I haven’t actually seen it either... he has such a great accent, are their recordings of him that aren’t just straight recitals?

There's a YouTube playlist of his debut LP, released in 1967 or thereabouts. Produced by George Martin. Yes, that one.

And, to complete the circle, how about a cover of one of his best songs by one of his best friends.

Robert Wyatt said of one of his songs.
"I worked on it a lot as I wanted the end result to sound fairly spontaneous"

If the only significant discover i’ve made on this forum is the other works of Ivor Cutler it would be well worth all the foolish things i’ve read and all the foolish thing I’ve written here...

O Caroline. Here's a recording I made of Daevid Allen's University of Errors live glissando version.

One of my favourite concerts:
