Tell me some good Dance/Club tracks from the 90s

Post by phats » Thu Jan 23, 2020 8:14 pm

Hey all

I'm trying to listen to a bit more of the "historic" stuff from 90s, bit before my time before I started going out.

Would love to hear any favourites you have

If you can post links to where they can be listened to as well would be great.

A lot happened in the 90s. There is a difference between early and late 90s too. There is so much good stuff from that period. I think that period also crossed over into the early 2000s as well. Do you have a genre preference? I honestly don't know where to start. One way to explore this is to find a track you like in Discogs and then check out the Recommendations shown below.

What I'm really interested in is the stuff people could do with the gear they had back then and how it evolved to what we have now. Some from that time are still producing but also woulda been a big influence on a lot of people that came later.

Genre hmm im pretty familiar with 90s big beat (rip) so Chemical Brothers, Prodigy, but I don't really know the genres. More house/techno less hardstyle/gabber or pop, early 2000s is ok.

I guess the stuff you wouldn't really hear on mainstream radio but were played a lot out. Perhaps "influential" but still a bit more underground, is what I am after. Maybe stuff that still kinda holds up today, but whatever floated your boat at the time is cool

Even though this was released in 1990 I would call this late 80s style.

Chicago had a good scene. Most quintessential "house" was started there. Check out Mr. Fingers and go from there. Plenty of info on the tools that were used from that time in Chicago to modern Chicago since the internet was there most the time and was being utilized by the tech savy group of musician. They didn't call it 'techno' for nothing.

The prob with discogs is if I look up a name and they have 30 releases I dont know where to start. If I know the tracks I can look at labels too I guess.

Yeah thats cool. I'm more interested in the vibe with the relatively limited setups of the day than the specifics of what/how.

A few of my favourites from back then, using sampled preachers.

A decidedly dirty, cogitated modular beat and more than a spattering of cello. 🐾🎻

Elaborate. Are you asking what music existed at the time generally as far as dance music or what they used to make it or both?

There is one absolutely amazing dance album from that era that I return to again and again to this day. Ian Pooley Meridian. Immortal tech-house.

Check out Dance Mania records outta chicago.
2 good recent comps:
Hardcore Traxx: Dance Mania Records 1986-1995
Dance Mania: Ghetto Madness
House turns into Ghetto House, which eventually leads to Footwork.
Sampler abuse

Mark Fells new york house mix! Back when Electronic Music was a gay thing and everything was machines mixed to tape.

The production usually started with a 909 drum track and then everything was either synched to that or played manually. Amazing loose and groovy timing and impossible to do on a computer, at least for me.

This is timely and perhaps gives you more direction than people posting tracks most of which are not underground
