Artists that mix electronic + acoustic instruments?

Post by arnoux » Sat Feb 01, 2020 11:19 am

I'm looking for inspiration as I'm more and more in love with acoustic sounds and I was debating if it was worth for me keeping my arsenal of expensive modulars or move in another direction, a more "concrete" approach, looping and manipulating my saxophone, piano and upright bass with pedals and tape machines.
Not easy tho, I have a Serge, a Cirklon, a CocoQuantus I have for sale but always wandering if the best thing to do is to keep everything and try integrate everything in a mixed acoustic/electronic genere.

Any suggestion on composers using modular (or electronic sounds in general) and "classical" instruments like cellos, winds, piano in a melodic way?

Thanks for discussing

Almost all of my favorite "electronic" musicians combine electronics with acoustic or electro-mechanical instruments. Here are some to look into, some of which you may know.

Floating Points combines Buchla and acoustic instruments like violins, cello, oboe, etc. on his new LP and used drum kits and Rhodes a lot on his last

Kaitlyn Aurelia Smiths' EARS has a lot of acoustic instruments like bass clarinet, sax, and flute along with her Easel

Robert Lowe/Lichens uses his voice as an oscillator

Philip Glass plays a Prophet 5 in the original performances of Einstein on the Beach and other pieces

Boards of Canada uses a good amount of guitar on Campfire Headphase--might be mostly electric though. But they also use acoustic drum kits and other percussion on their songs.

Mogwai combines synth and cello sometimes

Nils Frahm comes to mind :D.
... why buy it for $100 when you can build it yourself for $150?

Yeah a lot of those "neo-classical" musicians or whatever they're called: Max Richter, Jóhann Jóhannson, Ólafur Arnalds, et al

Forgot to mention Cluster!

I am recently experimenting a lot with guitar and electronics. As a guitarist and bass player I´m now closer to myself

Here's a recent album by me and Adam Cadell. It's a live improvisation where I'm processing his violin through Serge:

Please check out LCD Soundsystem. They do an almost perfect blend in my opinion.

Muslimgauze? Although by "classical' instruments you're mentioning western instruments, whereas he's using more Middle Eastern stuff.
