...an therefore with Raster Noton I'd name Ryoji Ikeda and many others.
ryoji ikeda's suppersymmetry is not just incredible sound design, but absolutely astonishing installation art period. utterly impressive in its scope and execution imo:

this video doesnt have all the sections of the installation as it's pretty big as with all Ikeda's works...but man o man!! Definately a good rec! :D

A friend of mine attended a live show a few years ago - I'm more than a jellyfish about him. But hellyeah there's an exhibition of him until end of this month...680km away.

Maybe these aren't really in the same sort of categories as most of these, but...

I will always think Coil had some of the most innovative and advanced sound design ever. Insane pitched and glitched vocals, head-spinning panning, intense analog, digital, and synthetic manipulation of acoustic instruments, everything through filters and filters and filters and modulation. They also used a lot of music concrete and sound collage stuff too, which was then often sampled, processed and arranged more. Obviously very dynamic too, from more industrial-electronic to sublime 'moon music' drones to outrageous psychedelic fits and post-modern archaic techno magic :spin: :spin:

Also have to shout out Robert Rich for his sound design and crazy beautiful array of different styles and the worlds he implements it in.

Tim Hecker and Oneohrtrix Point Never could probably be given a mention for some of their works too, I think.

the point of thread is to hear about stuff i would not normally try out.

Coil - i've known about forever - just not checked it before!
Love Tim Hecker's stuff too - thanks for the reminder to re-listen :D

I lost my mind over the new Grimes album - and its not dubstep, trap, IDM, breakcore, speedcore, splittercorer, DNB, avant garde...

There come to mind that I have to listen 'Monolake - Silence' album again after a few years. It should be mint and almost unplayed since I got the LP when it came out (2009).

fuck dude - that made my day!!!
This is the perfect exemplar of where modern drum'n'bass is. I'm unsure why or how, but the entire dnb scene subconsciously migrated to the zenith of the cutting sonic edge.
I prefer Emptyset or Kangding Ray, thanks.

jaap vink playlist

while this may not be something that falls into sound design, maybe it does. go listen to radiohead kid A on expensive headphones then come back in here talk about it. it is not your average sound design. shit was being done at a high level.

yeah! emptyset, kangding ray, ryoji ikeda <3 mucho gusto.

Some other shizzles:

Roly Porter - Third Law
Rrose - Hymn to Moisture , Monad XVI
Jesse Osborne-Lanthier - A.T.L.H.F.V.A.M.L.T.H.A.T.U

also worth following PAN & Stroboscopic Artefacts labels, lots of good stuff usually.
