What kind of music is this? Hard Techno?

Post by nateflanigan » Wed Mar 18, 2020 7:41 pm

I've been really into Ron Morelli lately where can I find more music like this? Is this hard techno? I like the dirty analog vibe, the relentless minimalism. Do you make music like this???

You could argue about genres forever - lets just call it techno

He runs LIES record label so you could start there though it’s a quite diverse label so it’s not all techno

Robert Hood would be imo the founder of less is more within techno so maybe minimal nation would be another place to start (I personally don’t like the label minimal techno)

There was a thread earlier about 90s techno and some of this thread has what your looking for

Dubonaire on here seems to know house, techno and electro back to front from previous threads like this so if your lucky he will make some suggestions for you also.

Sweet, I really prefer to call this stuff techno too. I'm familiar with minimal nation, I don't really like it as much as I wish I did, I'll give it another listen though. For the sake of clarifying what I'm looking for, it's not aggressive, or heavy enough for me.

Ok take two:

Regis - Necklace of Bites LP

Or

Rodhad - Dystopian Records - youtube playlist

This more what your looking for? Or something else.

Morelli was also in Two Dogs in a House. His Disappear LP is a pretty great. I’m not so crazy about some of the ambient stuff.

In addition to Regis, check out British Murder Boys, Rrose, Function, Female, Silent Servant, Surgeon, and Pessimist.

That's what got me to here, I saw Man Walks The Earth flipping through used records in a shop and thought the cover looked cool. I really liked the noisy ambient stuff so I dug deeper and was pleasantly surprised by the techno. I've always thought techno was cool I just didn't (don't) know how to articulate or find what exactly I like. I was joking with a friend that it's like I heard the rolling stones and went to a record store and tried to described it and they gave me a doobie brother's record. Like, wait, um, I can see that this has a lot of the same elements, and they've got groovy outfits and stuff, but um, no, not like this.

Anyhow, I'll check out the recommendations today, thanks!

Right up my alley! (I think.)
Seems you like straight up techno (as in, no additional descriptor such as 'hard' required ) of the darker variety, perhaps with some industrial influences.

Here's some tracks and a liveset that I like.
Some tracks are quite dissonant and in your face, so take care where- and at what volume you your start playing these.
To my taste a lot of artists only catch a certain rawness on a selection of their releases. Much of the techno out there sounds much too polished imho.

Karenn (which is a collaboration between Blawan & Pariah), a whole liveset:

Sleeparchive

The Mover

British Murder Boys

Surgeon

Gorman/Dettmann rmx

On more Dettmann rmx

Makaton

James Ruskin

James Ruskin (Luke Slater remix)

Claro Intelecto

Lucy

Lucy & Silent Servant

However sometimes more melodic stuff is welcome too -

Robert Hood

Planetary Assault Systems (=Luke Slater)

Exactly! There's been so many times I've watched a youtube video to check out some piece of gear, think what they're doing is rad, then go to their bandcamp and it's like no no no no just do what's in the video don't add all this other stuff and polish!

Thanks for the links, listening now

All of this is rad, thank you all. Does anyone else find this stuff really relaxing?

Very much so. I go to the occasional Techno festival for the music, my friends join in for, well, other reasons.

Totally, it's tough sitting on my couch listening to this stuff, it works a lot better for me when I'm driving, like I sort of need the front of my mind to be occupied while deep brain absorbs the vibes.
other reasons
I haven't had a reason for any real 'other reasons' in a long time...

When I can’t sleep, I often listen to this sort of techno. It is sort of trance inducing.

Was due to see Karenn and British Murder Boys at Re-textured before it was postponed. Voltcontrol you have made my week by posting those. Please post more selections if you have any further reccomendations. I'm relatively new to this area, but this is just my cup of tea!

Check out Mike Parker, I heard first of him on MW in another post on Techno.
https://mikeparker.bandcamp.com/

Although perhaps not 100% in same vein as the initial post made, if you new to techno, check out Oscar Mulero, some mixes of his that I find particularly good are:
https://soundcloud.com/dkmntl/oscar-mul ... tival-2018
https://soundcloud.com/invite-1/invites ... car-mulero

Also his PoleGroup label and Warm Up records are worth checking out:

Enjoy.

Because I used to dj with Spotify to test things out I have made this 120 hours+ techno Spotify playlist. Mostly handpicked tracks (not just album / ep playlist drops) with a focus on the more ambient hypnotic vibes. I think there is also some of the harder more raw sounding stuf inside. Don’t update it as often anymore but it can still be a nice gateway to the genre. Just make sure to look up the record labels. And of course if you have a dj or midi controller and an app like Djay pro you could just instantly start playing a techno dj set. ;)

..good stuff..
All good shouts!
Mulero can be very good, but definitely more small club than festival techno.
Next to the ones you've posted I like this one: ..very hypnotic.

A rather eclectic set from Surgeon, with some cool ravey/elektro elements.

Some more tracks from the archives:

Continuous mode

James T. Cotton

Steve Bicknell (Surgeon remix)

Planetary Assault Systems (=Luke Slater)

Josh Brent remix of a Galliano track

The Advent

And a warm bath to conclude:
Rue East

I'm definitely going to go through the Spotify list!

How did you DJ (specifically beatmatch & mix) with Spotify? Djay pro as mentioned? With controllers?

I use Djay pro 2 since for as far as I know thats the only dj app that supports Spotify streaming. Effects sound shit and I wished it was a bit more flexible like Traktor, but it does the job. For a controller, I use a Reloop Mixtour. Because it's small, it's fairly cheap, it can work with a smartphone and overall has a nice balance of functionality. The only real downside is that it doesn't have any jogwheels. So you have to use your mouse or a touchscreen to nudge, set cue points and stuff.

Thnx! Looks ace to me for occasional dj' ing for Spotify users. The Reloop Beatpad 2 looks perfect actually, but a tad too expensive. Might look out for a used one. :tu:
