Gum is fun, but not on a cat.

I like the Kingsley original more. Such a great groove and builds like a goddamned champ.

:bananallama:
New track! Drum synthesis heavy, melodic piece where Instruō harmonàig is doing the chords. 🐡

I’ll step out on a limb and say the most important electronic song is actually a sample: the Amen break by the winstons

And then James Brown’s catalogue. Heavily sampled and foundational in sample-based electronic music.

Then it’s these tracks that are pretty pivotal from my POV:
Kraftwerk - Trans Europe express
Afrika Bambaataa - Planet Rock
Donna Summer - I feel love
Throbbing Gristle in general
Aphex Twin - RJD Album in entirety

Ha... so many of these I'd also nominate. This is really a bit of fun isn't it? If Autobahn by Kraftwerk could be considered a song, then for me, that would probably be it.

Nice to see I Feel Love, Warm Leatherette and even Bernard Szajner's Welcome (To Death Row) mentioned. That largely modular sourced Szajner album is intense!

The double A sided 12" single pairing that I always get knocked out over every time I revisit is 1982's Bamboo Music/Bamboo Houses by Ryuichi Sakamoto and David Sylvian. That pretty boy, hair and makeup period of the New Romantic era is something I normally run away from (the music that is), but this Japan era collaboration is an honourable exception. Fantastically rich synth programming combined with great arrangements, atmosphere, melodies etc. Houses edges it for me.

Why, thank you

And thanks IR for posting that link to the Arthur Brown's Kingdom Come track - never heard that album but I enjoyed Galactic Zoo Dossier back then - gleefully eccentric.

Eno's "Discreet Music", as once defined by the late, great Lester Bangs, "either the definitive unobtrusively lustrous statement on ambient musics or a wispy treacly bore that defies you to actually pay attention to it [...] depending on your point of view."

AND,

OBVIOUSLY,

POPCORN!!!!

How about a bit of "Blue Monday"?

Maybe not my favourite, but would have to be a candidate for 'greatest'.

I don't believe there is any single track that is "best".

Instead there are 100+ if I had to guess.

Too many subtle and important differences and genres.

I saw this and thought it was about the Bernard Sumner + Johnny Marr project called Electronic. Idiot country would be my favorite from them.

If we're gonna go all "I can't believe no one has posted The So-N-Sos yet" then I'll submit what is probably THE most obvious selection (and well deserved at that) ..... over ONE BILLION VIEWS on YT in just over ten years ...... what is probably one of the most iconic 80s songs coupled with an amazingly creative and ground breaking TOTALLY UNFORGETTABLE video ..... people think ~80s~ they think this song ... when people think ~this song~ they think 1980s ... the two are forever completely connected, nearly as one entity... utterly slathered with the electronic sounds of the era ... the romantic love story, the dashing "good guy" rebel, the bad guys, the beautiful "girl next door", the innocence, the ridiculously brilliant "hook" (catchy melody), easily sung-a-long vocals ... it's all there ... the song, and probably moreso the video with the song, hit just the right place in millions (dare I say billions?) of human hearts ...

You mean this place has hot chicks, morning drinking, and free vomit? ... I'm all in!

+1

I hated disco for the most part back in the day, but Donna Summer was just undeniable.

I agree with Rexi that it's like picking your favorite grain of sand on the beach... I'm going to say that it needs to be 100% electronic bust give the word "song" a little more leeway and propose something a little different:

A few of my favorites have already been talked about. Watering down the "electronic" side, but going deeper int the "song" side, Pink Floyd's Shine on You Crazy Diamond (all parts) is perhaps the most influential song on my music.
