If we're gonna go all "I can't believe no one has posted The So-N-Sos yet" then I'll submit what is probably THE most obvious selection (and well deserved at that) ..... over ONE BILLION VIEWS on YT in just over ten years ...... what is probably one of the most iconic 80s songs coupled with an amazingly creative and ground breaking TOTALLY UNFORGETTABLE video ..... people think ~80s~ they think this song ... when people think ~this song~ they think 1980s ... the two are forever completely connected, nearly as one entity... utterly slathered with the electronic sounds of the era ... the romantic love story, the dashing "good guy" rebel, the bad guys, the beautiful "girl next door", the innocence, the ridiculously brilliant "hook" (catchy melody), easily sung-a-long vocals ... it's all there ... the song, and probably moreso the video with the song, hit just the right place in millions (dare I say billions?) of human hearts ...

For some strange reason, I have a now uncontrolable urge to smash something.......

Yea, I'm rather lousy at these types of threads. It's too easy to hit the googles, search for esoteric synth music and post something to look as though one has some sort of unique taste. Not saying that I am aware of anyone doing that here in this thread, I am saying that these types of topics are too easy to sortof "cheat" (in a sense). Yes, yes, I understand that there is value here, regardless of whether or not participants are just searching for music topical to the thread and posting it, or if folks are sharing music they've been fans of and actually spent money on over the years. But for some reason I just can't really do this right in these types of threads. In this instance, it's not anything about the original topic any longer, it's about posting a list of little known recordings. I've yet to see an example of "Greatest Electronic Song Ever" other than the one I posted as an example ... and I'm perfectly willing to be corrected if I've missed anything. But it's clear this is no longer about the "Greatest Electronic Song Ever" .... it's about little known electronic pop or little known experimental electronic music. Greatest electronic song ever? Nope.

So I posted "Take on me" by the Scandinavian band known as A Ha who are from Norway. From Wiki; "The success of "Take On Me" lies also in its sales, as the single would go on to sell over 7 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling singles of all time."

I suppose it comes down to defining ~greatest~ ..... :)

Carry on, I don't want to ruin the fun for everyone (I'm not being sarcastic) ... I'll leave my participation here with this (CS80, Minimoog, et al..) ..... :)

You mean this place has hot chicks, morning drinking, and free vomit? ... I'm all in!

Be fair Rex Coil 7, threads like these give people the chance to say they prefer the original Kingsley version of Popcorn. What more could you want?

This song may not be the best fit for this thread, but if the topic was "best triple-solo song" or somesuch, it would be at the top of my list. I've always felt it was a defining moment in prog rock: Eddie Jobson just careening about like a madman; his Hammond is literally seething. Wonderful stuff.

Greatest is a tough call.
Most influential is easier. Lucky Man by ELP. Hands down. That solo sold more synths than anything ever.

The elephant in the room of course is anything off of SOB. The only reason Lucky Man sits above her work is that there just weren't as many synths to be had when SOB came out!

I'd say there's a couiple late 60'S Beatles songs that could fit the bill. I don't even have to name them, that's how much you already know them.

Funeral For a Friend.

Frankenstein with Edgar Winter carrying his 3604 was a seminal song.

Again, I don't think any of these are "The Greatest". But they have to be on the very short list of most influential to the general population.

With that said, I might as well JUMP! ;)

Damn, everybody knows it's "The Modern Dance" by Pere Ubu...Allen Ravenstine's EML squiggles & bleeps are revelatory!
Best,
John

Not as good as Crazy Frog's version. That's the 'greatest electronic song ever' in much the same way the Minilogue is the greatest polyphonic synthesiser ever.

History started in the year 2000. Now when can we do the greatest ringtone ever?

Best,

Those first two Pere Ubu albums were phenomenal. I reckon Ravenstine's keyboardless 'pure' synth work complements the other band instruments, in those instances, near perfectly. I remember David Thomas describing how the instruments combine to convey the 'Ubu' manifestation. Something like, the bass/drums being the legs... while the synth is the sound of firing brain neurons. Beautifully shown here on "Over My Head" where the EML's 'synth-lab', but plaintive, soundings enhance the emotional impact of the song.

Perhaps not the case in this example, but with many of the older nominees in this thread, if they'd been given a decent break in radio airplay exposure and maybe edited down a bit "Autobahn" style where called for, could easily have gone on to be chart climbing hits. So for me just going by record sales etc is too restrictive a barometer.

Why are almost all of the entries from before 1990?

No Björk, BoC, Broadcast, James Blake, Kaytlin Aurelia Smith, LCD SS, Wu Tang, Thom Yorke, or...Miley Cyrus?!

Always thought this BoC track had something for appeal beyond the hard core fans. Wish they'd done a bit more of this 'bold' strokes type of sound picture. I like BoC but always felt their 'nostalgic' wonky turntable/tape effect elsewhere was a bit 'one-trick' and overused.

Really drawn to this Bjork track as well.

definitely no one greatest but will throw down a few faves not yet represented.

Shame that Philip Glass Music With Changing Parts is not on youtube, that is one of my favorite records of all time.

Steve Hillage, the Cantebury God

Low and Heroes are pretty much one thought, Eno's finest work in my book. B side of Low is insane.

Great selections here, but nobody has mentioned Tangerine Dream's Love on a Real Train yet?
