Brian Eno: Lyrics and Vocals

Post by onthebandwagon » Fri Oct 23, 2020 7:48 pm

Anyone else also appreciate Eno more for his lyrics and vocals than his "treatments"? While I like his absurdist word play I find songs like Spider and I to be really poignant, lyrically. Also, his singing on Blank Frank, for example, is really something special.

The lyrics to “The Belldog” give me goose bumps.

Most of the day, we were at the machinery
In the dark sheds that the seasons ignored
I held the levers that guided the signals to the radio
But the words I received, random code, broken fragments from before
Out in the trees, my reason deserting me
Oh, the dark stars cluster over the bay
Then in a certain moment, I lose control
And at last, I am part of the machinery
Where are you?
And the light disappears
As the world makes its circle through the sky

Yes I too love The Belldog.
He has a big romantic, almost cosmic, streak in him, but likes to keep it hidden.
Spinning Away on the Eno /Cale album Wrong Way Up, is in the same vein - glorious, sublime, heaven.

The lyrics and vocals on Taking Tiger Mountain (by Strategy) are sublime. Well, the whole record is sublime really.

When I started listening to those early solo albums I found that one the least accessible, will have to revisit.

Nerve Net has always been one of my favourites for vocals. Every track has its own quirky take. For instance the phonemes in The Roil The Choke swap around like bells in change ringing (I didn't work this out myself - he's spoken about it in interviews).

Julie With... is another pick. Along with the music they create a perfect, drifting vignette.
Is it finished?

I always liked his cover of "You Don't Miss You Water", on the "Married To The Mob" soundtrack.
