Music you sort of get but can't get get into

Post by onthebandwagon » Fri Oct 30, 2020 8:05 am

Every time I try to listen to Venetian Snares I think this will be the time I get into it but end up switching it off after a track or two.

I heard Television on the radio the other day. I can appreciate their importance but the self consciousness of the song writing, makes me unable to appreciate them.

I do like the Elvis Costell's style and attitude.

Realize this will be heresy to many here, but still have difficulty getting into most Autechre after Tri Repetae or thereabouts, though I am liking the new one (Signs). I admire the sound design, production and programming skill, but my brain can’t seem to process what it perceives as overly dense or random chaos on most of the tracks into something enjoyable. Love the first one and Amber, along with several tracks from more recent stuff.

Also, Magma comes to mind. Despite being a big “prog rock” guy, the operatic aspect is too steep a hill. And Henry Cow-too far into the avant garde spectrum for my personal taste. Wanted to like them more.

I feel the same way about Autechre, I do listen to them here and there but not with much enthusiasm.

i said this elsewhere: boards of canada. i gave up after the 3rd attempt. i adore contemporaries in the genre.

merzbow: (shit, there goes my street cred) i would consider that to be harsh noise, and i'm not sure hardcore enthusiasts would agree with me, but i like to think of music with melodic elements without the classic song structure (or even acts that actively explore structural dissolution) as soft noise: like black dice, OPN's replica and the previous morphological iterations of (proto) vaporwave that were floating around a decade ago. fuckin love chuck person's eccojams.

Boards of Canada on vinyl. It is good on digital but no effect on vinyl;((

Most of aggressive and depressive music. Music that are highly related with any “ prophecy” or “ wisdom” or call to action

Just to take the heat of the Autechre guys, I feel like I should like Aphex Twin a lot more than I do.

I don't dislike him, but I don't get the reverence either. I'll take Squarepusher over him any day.

Just about anything electronic that is popular here, Autechre, OneOhTrix, bleeping scratching insects talking to stalagmites in caves. Then there's all that Messiaen stuff.
But Beefheart, I put the time in .. listened to TMR regularly maybe ten years ago.. and now, uh, I dig it big time.

I have to admit I can only stand about two minutes of techno. I know it’s awesome in theory but, like Italian opera, it just doesn’t hold my attention.

Boards of Canada. I find their stuff to be dull, hollow, form over content and not groovy at all. I remember that I complained about them over on the Warp Records message board when Music has the right to children had just been released and the internet was young. 8-)
You go too high too early, man. I remixed a pop song using my piano, an 808 and a Minilogue. :animal:

I also tend to like music that is compared to/inspired by Boards of Canada way more than Boards of Canada. It's probably too beat based for my taste. At the same time loving anything Ghost Box related and that whole vibe.

I had issues with the "jammyness" of Can until I heard Future Days and it somehow unlocked all their other stuff for me.

For me Boards of Canada have a few really compelling songs like the one that has the "I love you" sample which really startled me the first time I heard it but aside from those a lot feels like filler to me.

Forget about the groove. They made music that makes you feel like a lone mossy rock nearby a pond on a late autumn sunset. :tu:

One of my mates is really into Autechre and Boards of Canada, but I find them very average. On the other hand I like Nurse With Wound, who he finds unlistenable.

John Coltrane - A Love Supreme. I know it´s not just a classic but "the album" for many. I could`t get into it and disliked it a lot for really a long time, found it absolutely awful although i started lovin some jazz pieces over the last years.

.... But just now i gave it another try and found out that i can actually be "friend" with this piece of music. Sorry i`m of topic now ;)

Brian Eno. While I respect his work and understand the importance I just can't dig it....also negative points for producing U2
Positive points for having his artist assistant go scouring around 70s NY for black s+m porn pics, nice work if you can get it

100 Gecs.
In a way I can respect what they're doing— I'd sort of call it "electro-punk for the internet age", but aesthetically just doesn't do it for me; most of the time it just sounds too goofy for me to take seriously.
Taking the goofiness in stride, Stupid Horse is kind of a fun novelty song I guess. I really want to like 800dB Cloud but the cheesy MIDI soundbank powerchord guitars just sort of kill it for me.
