I find Freak Out! to be fairly brilliant, but yeah, later Zappa seems like just angular, off-putting wankery.

Bob Dylan, Frank Zappa......etc., etc..........Ok, and most of the Beatles and the Stones....
I don’t even try to like it; all kinds off jazz, country & western......and dixieland.
Edit: shortened my list a bit

Back in the early 1980s, when I was getting to know my future long-term collaborator (forty years and three groups now) we tried each other's tastes out. From me he got Tangerine Dream, Faust, Can, Heldon; but couldn't get Nurse With Wound or Throbbing Gristle. From him I got Pink Floyd, King Crimson and Van der Graaf Generator; but couldn't get Genesis or Yes, both of which he still loves today

Zappa: Some of his early music was complex, melodic, full of joy and devoid of any cynism.

While I mostly agree about Bowie, Low was a great album, but maybe more an Eno endeavor.
I think that Changes is one of the best singles collections and I use to listen to it as an album when I was younger.

Despite their droll senes of humor, Sparks makes me want to smash things.

Re: Music you sort of get but can't get get into
Really surprised nobody has said this yet but for me it's Bob Dylan. (et al).
I "get" that he's a genius (or something, probably) but to me it seems more like poetry than music. How many times can I really listen to someone play three chords on a guitar over and over? Can't get into it.
PS: Radiohead is great, but must be a generational thing I guess.

"it might be worth hunting down the Bernard Purdie outtakes recorded for Royal Scam."
That sounds interesting. Thanks...

Like a lot of people, I suspect, I like a few of Dylan's early songs, but the bulk of his output leaves me cold. Especially his Xmas song . . .

Dylan was a good songwriter for other people. But he sings like a man trying to forcibly eject his sinuses through his nostrils.

Agreed on the younger Dylan. Now that he’s old the added degradation of his vocal chords and more indifferent take on what’s happening in the world make his recent music enjoyable to me.commodorejohn wrote: ↑Fri Nov 13, 2020 1:08 amDylan was a good songwriter for other people. Four posts later.......

Re: Music you sort of get but can't get get into
Can't believe no one has mentioned The Beatles or Bob Dylan!
Just kidding. Actually, I don't believe how someone has actually mentioned Bob Dylan and The Beatles. I can't think of anything I thought was more universally "likeable", but each to their own.

I can handle 1 song a day of the Beatles or Dylan. That’s ok.

I have to admit I’ve spent money on a Modern Talking album once or twice. I was 12 years old, it was a long time ago.....

Lol, thanks man. Sorry, really surprised I missed that -- probably was distracted by all the slagging of Bowie, my hero.

The Pixies aside from from what Albini's sound on Surfer Rosa.

Seconded. Saw them live at Pasadena Daydream fest last year. Was excited remembering how much I dug Rosa in college, but it was one of the most boring shows of my life. Never realized how every song they've ever written kind of just sounds exactly the same; an hour and a half of it was exhausting.onthebandwagon wrote: ↑Fri Nov 13, 2020 2:43 pmThe Pixies aside from from what Albini's sound on Surfer Rosa.

Re: Music you sort of get but can't get get into
i think there's something to be said about listening to music you weren't exposed to in your teens and twenties. in that formative period i listened to everything i could get my hands on. but now trying to get into new artists now is almost a chore. that's not to say i don't still explore what's out there, but if it doesn't immediately click i move on. i just can't soak it up like i used to. and some of the stuff i used to tolerate - like long form psych music i have to be in the mood for. acid mothers temple, boredoms, black dice, parson sound, etc.
one i genuinely don't get that has a dedicated cult following is jandek.
