Very cool, I've been listening to Leviathan for a long time now so this really resonates (pun intended) with me.

I love Leviathan! The Sunn O))) album Black One originally got me into Xasthur, but I'm really not that into it that much. I'm probably the least interested in Striborg.

Striborg is the Beavis of the black metal world.

Leviathan, Xasthur, Nortt, Furze, older Burzum are good.

I don't buy into any of the satanic/depressive bullshit surrounding this genre. Corpse paintakes me laugh. But if the music is good it's good, so I have a good bit of this genre. Leviathan's alter ego Lurker of Chalice would probably be of interest to people here as well.

I haven't really paid much attention to this genre, but the Xasthur tracks I've checked out on Youtube remind me more than a little of 'Faith' era Cure. I kind of like it for the gray distant wash of sound - the vocals are mercifully buried though I could do without them altogether.

Striborg doesn't have quite the same effect - maybe too straightforward? The lyrics are maybe the worst I've ever seen, luckily also unintelligible.

What else in the genre is worth checking out for the gray wash of noise?

i know Russell (striborg), he's an interesting guy. i first became aware of him through his noise project Veil of Darkness, which is made with an Arp Odyssey he got from the tip for $50.

i loved how he took the interviewer into the World heritage old growth forests of Tasmania- what a host! then nails it when he says 'atmosphere is everything, nothing else matters'

i listened again to his striborg stuff & after a while i became acutely aware of how the sibilence in the tape was making his voice sound like a stream of knives flowing from his mouth. and that it sounded almost identical to the screams of a Tasmanian devil..
And still the same slow riff rolled on.

also really loved the other two. another good one in this genre is early Ildjarn.

here's some Veil of Darkness :sb:

I will say that of the 3, the person who I'd be most comfortable hanging out with is Striborg. Music is fine - I just don't dig the vocals of the one CD of his that I own.

Crazy that Wrest was a somewhat notable skater.

Xasthur guy needs to be treated for depression, pronto. Love his music, but his life situation is fucked and he is obviously crying out for help. The guitar he proclaims as using up the last of his money is a $200 instrument....

This is just a guess but I have a feeling that he could be getting disability benefits which usually gives you just enough to get by. Either way, I hope that guy is doing alright.

Listen to Velvet Cacoon. Start with "Genevieve". Leviathan/Lurker Of Chalice and Velvet Cacoon are my favorite ambient black metal artists. Velvet Cacoon now goes under the name Clair Cassis, by the way, if you want to check that out, too.

the vocal scream that Xasthur displayed on command simply sitting down put to shame Striborg's dressed in black, corpse painted, night time, forest wandering, candle lighting, cave dwelling, screaming antics there.

loved this series, leviathan is amazing and lots of xasthur is great as well. i've never really listened to striborg but i related with a lot that guy had to say, especially about the connection with black and nature.
i was expecting scott connor to be very different, and i have a new respect for him after watching this. it made me go back and start listening to his albums again and they had much more of an impact.

Really enjoyed these, too. My only gripe was when at the start, the interviewer referred to American BM as the third wave of it, when in all fairness there was a global third wave around the 00's, some amazing releases came out on Northern Heritage at that time from all over the world.

I have a lot of respect for the guys in Xasthur and Leviathan after watching that. I also feel the same way about solitude and nature as Russell even though I'm not into the corpse paint and candles thing at all. Thought the bit with him screaming in a cave was kinda silly.

I really liked what Scott had to say on releasing music and not concerning himself with an image for it. It is what it is.

Also great that as far as I could tell, none of the 3 had the silly national socialist references that seem to be rife with the scene over here in Europe.
