I've known of Drexciya since getting neptunes lair and harness the storm, recently saw dopplereeffekt at ADE and reminded me to check out more connected artist. This thread is a gem and so many pseudonyms and info i had missed over the years, its great to now revisit and discover new all over again. Thanks all! :hyper:

Worth pointing out that Gerald Donald released new music this year!

(Transllusion album is better than the [still very very awesome] Drexciya records, don't @ me.)

808

Post by vanjorny » Sat Mar 11, 2017 12:30 pm

I have a question to this 808 on "Let me be" on "The other people place" (repress available) which has some sounds just a bit different from the rest.
That sounds cool because less sterile.

Here is the youtube link:

track

Do you think it was variied on the fly, knob fiddling... or the 808 is sampled?
It just does not to seem sampled for me.

Thank you for your sharing your knowledge!

Cornelius

PS what do you think is the synthesizer for these nice pads?

There's quite a bit of 606 on that album, isn't there?

All the drexciya stuff was recorded live so I'd say there's a good chance opp was to some extent. As for the synth I don't know, but it sounds awesome in every track.

Probably old news to many, but Warp reissued the Other People Place at the end of last year so it's no longer only available at outrageous second hand prices.

Gerald Donald was also a member of Ectomorph at the beginning of their career, and if you don't know this band yet.. Well here's a nice way to spend your next hours ;)

As for the repress of Grava 4 I'm kinda happy because there's a track on it I really like

But I'd be so happy if they decide to repress the first Arpanet record (Wireless Internet) which is to me one if not the best electro record of all time..
If anyone at clone reads this.. haha

Grava 4 reissue is out !

Saw Arpanet live last year 8 floors up at a studio complex looking over Berlin.. a fittingly alien and wonderful experience.

Just seen what looks like the Shifted Phases album up for pre-order??? https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.deck ... ope/9m5-g8

Would be amazing if the whole Storm Series gets repressed.

Lots of complaints about distortion on this repress?/reissue?
Shame the market is now polluted with a sub-standard pressing of this classic album.

I'm not all that impressed. I was listening to this stuff 40 years ago.

Roland TR 808
Korg Monopoly
Roland D110
Raw talent

anything else confirmed?

What kind of effects do you think they used? On Transllusion on there's a phaser type of effect that sounds amazing, think it might be analogue?

ok - interesting. So.. examples please? always keen to hear stuff I've missed.

Beatless, icy -ambient electro with a teutonic sounding twist from the '70s : bring it ! :)

Well Kraftwerk, Can, Tangerine Dream, John Foxx were 40 years ago. Detroit electro was 30 years ago. There might some subtle stylistic differences and maybe cleaner production but seriously, when it's so elementally part of the same sound it's not impressive to me.

And I loved Dopplereffekt. It's OK though, Blade Runner is making a return and Gary Numan sells out arenas.

Aah. Ok. well I think we'll have to agree to disagree then : I love all of your above references ( who doesn't ) but I think Dopplereffekt bring something unique to the table & it's enough to impress me, anyhow. I'd say there's more than a 'subtle stylistic' difference between Tangerine Dream, Derrick May, Can & Dopplereffekt ?
Is this not a bit like saying I'm not that impressed with Mogwai because of Black Sabbath, King Crimson & Nirvana ? I mean, there are subtle stylistic differences, but ultimately it's all rock music, produced primarily with electric guitar, bass & drums....

Well, I too am a bit less than moved by the new dopplereffekt. The glacial drones and basic beats approach doesn't really expand my auditory experience. When I compare it with something like Virtual Geisha the joy difference is enormous. Frankly, after 10 years of research time I was hoping for something a bit less bland.

Yes true. And look if you are enjoying it I'm fine with that. :tu:
