I'd like to join the party too

https://soundcloud.com/woofermusic/woofer-live-set-1

We are two members in Woofer, me on modular and my partner on Ableton+Push.

Everything is improvised as we go along. We need to develop our sound a bit more, but I still think our first set came out pretty great.

Lots of nice stuff here :)

I am doing live improve techno/idm on just the modular. Can get a bit big and complex sometimes, hardest part for me is to keep it minimal and focus on the grove.
Every gig is an exercise.

Powerful stuff, I just sold my tempest, thinking of getting my hands on a rytm instead. Now I know I made the right choice haha.

With enough VCA's you have voltage control over the amount of voltage control you use to change the amount of voltage control.

WOW!!! @joey

That is exactly the kind of live set I aspire to. Very industrial/EBM feel. Right up my alley.

Can you go over your live rig/setup please. How much of the set up was modular? How do you deal with transitions between songs?

Would love to learn.

4 voices from the modular..Octatrack with Vermona QMI for sequencing, transitions are improvised on the spot but usually involve a lot of reverb. I can't always remember what sequences are where so it's somewhat on the fly. Analog RYTM on all the drums

@joey- thanks for the info. wasn't familiar with the QMI before this.

A few further questions if you don't mind...

Are you using a modular sequencer at all for your synth voices?

Are you live sampling the 4 voices from the modular into the Octatrack and then messing with them live?

Do you have a ModularGrid link of your modular setup for live?

Any more live vids?

The Octatrack is the sequencer, it does some fx but no sampling. I'd definitely like to get into that but I'm not that brave yet!

The modular setup changes every time so there isn't a point in showing it but in that video you are hearing the elements, shapeshifter, loquelic and Basimilus Iteritas thru the serge VCFQ, Cwejman MMF-1, Koma SVF-201, some VCAs, and clouds + Octatrack fx

There is a video of me playing in London somewhere and a few other live sets on my soundcloud

edit: here is the case, but this will change for the next gig:

Thanks so much @joey for sharing your knowledge...

I will post below my question I asked in another thread as it got no responses at all, if you don't mind...

I've begun playing out live. Really enjoying it.

But I've got to put together a 30 to 40 min set next month. The longest I've done is 15 mins so far. I can noodle for hours, but it is not cohesive in a performance sense. (Don't really want to stop and start things!)

I use the Mixer on the modular and the Mackie to essentially solo and mute things and I create my songs by bringing things in and out via the mixer and playing with the effects.

Musical style is Berlin school intro into a techno/aphex type of vibe.

What is the advice from you seasoned pros about using instruments with no memory and transitions between pieces?

Equipment will be: Modular rig (see below), Roland sh101, tr8 and sonic potions lxr.
Will also be using a Mackie profx12 mixer. Eventide Space, bitcrusher and delay pedals.

During my last performance I started out with a bunch of drone type things on the modular and then went into a simple sequence on the Metropolis and a bass line from the sh101.
Then went back to the drone pad thing and quickly reprogrammed a pattern on the sh101 changed the tempo on my master tr8 and hit them with the new song.

But where do I go from there? Drums aren't so much of a problem it's the melodic elements...

Any advice is much appreciated.

do you care about (modular) equalizers in live techno setups?

yes, I don't like any other thing than my kick and bass interfering with low frequencies in my mix... mostly, that is unless I go for long ambient part in a set or something

I use a standard studio mix for this, I have no modular EQ

@joey

Sorry for this long winded post, but I would love to learn more...

Your live set inspired me to have a play with creating some sounds like that- this is NOT a finished musical piece by any means but just trying things out- levels and effects wise.
https://soundcloud.com/androiddreams/live-acid-2016

One of the difficulties is:
- getting the kick to hit as hard as yours did. Any secrets?
Compression? side chaining???

I used my trusty Mackie 1604 mixer to overdrive the drums from a TR8- max compression on the device with Eventide Space and a Boss DD7 delay with a very short time. The first synth sound you hear is from an SH101 and the pattern is from a TB3.
I envision a modular line and perhaps some pads to come over top.

here are the obstacles I came up with (other than a relatively repetitive boring song)

1) I maxxed the fader for the kick (to get THAT tone- if levels are lower it doesn't sound right at all) and therefore I cannot get the synth sound levels correct at all

2) How to get really hard hitting drums and still have clarity in the synths?

my kick is unprocessed, straight out from the rytm kick output into the mixer!

but how I made it is my secret ;)

KiNK is a huge inspiration of mine, hope you caught him when he was in SF last year, that was a killer show.

I learned a lot from his "how I play" interview:

I do a lot less structured, more improvised set without a laptop, but it almost makes me want to take the time to learn Ableton...almost...

Aaaaawwww... C'mon help a brother out! Best sounding kick I've ever heard in my life!
I want to go out and buy a Rythm because of that kick alone!

One more question. Sorry Joey.

What is the device to the right of your modular synth during that liveset? Looked like you were programming rhythms into it live?
