In C - Terry Riley for 11 oscillators

Post by funken » Tue Feb 18, 2020 8:18 am

Hey Bonjour ,

we start a crazy projet, playing "In C - Terry Riley" for 11 oscillators and 53 shapes
we have 2 modular case and some midi controlers, and a video installation.

Why 11 vco, because the first version was recorded with 11 instruments.
and why 53 shapes, because the partition is composed of 53 short musical cells

here a first teaser :

Fantastique - so damn counterproductive (for the rest of your inspirations) that you need to keep the eurorack setup this way until the piece is done - but yes, that’s the main issue with eurorack synts (unless you’d go for a setup like Rossum Assimilator x2, morpheus x8 where you could save patches)

Oh, wise guy huh? What's the deal with all this ~music~ and shit here ... out of Eurorack!!??!! Pffft ... why, who would ever dream of such a thing! Silly notion ... ~actual music~ ... out of Eurorack ... HA! Perish the thought.

;) ... very nice! ...

hey thanks for the nice feedback, here some news about this project

- A new teaser of the live performance

- We are going to do our first show on Saturday (In France in the town of LE MANS) super stressed but happy.
and we have some other show to come in France and Belgium before the end of the year.

- At the end of September, we will record a complete version in good conditions, and a french label (http://www.unjenesaisquoi.org/ ) will produce the vinyl and digital version of the result accompanied by a 24-page color booklet with illustrations and some information on the sheet music and our system. pretty cool

Can I ask what 11 oscillators you're using?
Also interested in how you are sequencing the whole thing, I see some eurorack oscillators but also interested in the interaction with MIDI.
If you're willing to go into the process a little bit, that is... :)

Hey yes of course :

01 - Makenoise 0-coast (Bongo)
02 - Intellijel Dixie II (pad)
03 - Distink MK4 (wavetable vco mode with custom wavetable) (Short strike with Makenoise MMG)
04 - Mutable Plaits (string )
05 - Eowave Domino (bass)
06 - Verbos CO (vco 1) (Various timber)
07 - Verbos CO (vco 2) (Bongo)
08 - Eowave Titan (pad)
09 - Erica Black VCO (mid bass)
10 - Moog Mother 32 (pas with shimmer rvb)
11 - Intruos Tš-L (pulse)

Here case pictures : https://photos.app.goo.gl/tU4R7QsMJjAcLCF79

For sequencing, we have a computer with Ableton live, we have one midi track for each voice (so 11 midi track)
we have on each case a midi to cv module, and we use midi 2 controller to change musical cells, manually, we can advance the score for each oscillator in a polyrhymitic way and also stay together always at 3 cells maximum difference. And like This each performance offers a different result, this is one of the joys of IN C

we also use some homemade max device, to sync the midi cell to a another computer, which manages the video animation.

here a great web site for to learn more about the construction and concept of the score :

Hello,

Some news about this project.

here a snippet of the last gig @ Rennes (France)

We spent two days recording and mixing the album version of our version of IN C, in the magnificent Impersonal Studio of Thomas Poli in Rennes (France). With Brice Kartmann as sound engineer with a beautiful STUDER 928 console.

Recorded and mixed in live conditions, can't wait to share the result with you.

here some pictures
