Some shaky (vertical! tut!) footage of some of my performance at the Naviar Haiku Fest in the Old Church, Stoke Newington on Saturday.

AudioObscura and SozuProject were also on the bill, and a recording of the gig will likely get released on Naviar Records.

Le Glitch - Live Performance at La Grange de Dorigny

Post by ParsecWaves » Sun Dec 03, 2017 6:02 am

Hello Wigglers,

I just had my first live performance last Friday night and wanted to share the approach and result with you.

I had carte blanche to perform during "Le Glitch" event at La Grange de Dorigny, University of Lausanne, Switzerland. During this event, 5 artists and one university researcher would have about 15 minutes to do a presentation or performance around the glitch. That transient fault you can find in about everything, from video games to print, to software, to TV, even in people's behavior.

There was one violinist, one poet-singer, one contrabassist, one dancer and myself with a modular synth.

This came out of the blue during a casual discussion with some people at the university. I had mentioned my modular synth as we discussed a few ideas to animate an upcoming event on the glitch and I was swiftly invited to be part of it. I couldn't say no. Sometimes in life you are presented with crazy opportunities, I believe you should not let them pass.

It was a bit stressful thinking of producing myself in public for the first time. But I had months to prepare so it should be okay (of course I started working only four days before, but it probably was for the better).

I was inspired by Richard Devine's work, like Ascension. But I had not the time, experience and sheer amount of modules to do anything close.

Oh, and there was this laser thing: Richard's closing track at Tokyo Modular Festival in 2014, with Bernhard Rasinger (BR-Laser). I was shocked at the time by this beautiful, riveting and meditative display of sound and light.

Yeah... I don't own a second modular synth for video&lasers neither own an RGB laser projector.

but wait, what if...

What if I could code something up with web technologies (namely HTML5 Canvas/Javascript/Web Audio API). I already had done a few successful experiments on additive light compositing. So why not try something out?

Three full days of coding later, here's a pretty good approximation of a powerful laser trail / persistence of vision done in software. Still not anything close to the real stuff in terms of power and contrast, but enough to be interesting.

As for the audio part, I was not happy with what I had and threw everything away the morning of the event. Dangerous move, but I thought that I could at worst improvise a drone and be okay. I sat down on my couch and for the first time in my modular meanderings I composed something. And THAT is a new approach to me! I usually explore sounds on my rig until something interesting emerges, then I refine it. I was even actively avoiding composition. But this time, I had an idea in my head, beforehand. And time was running short...

The idea was to do some drony intro with a lot of static and glitches, then to evolve on a more melodic thing and explode it ala Cortini with strongly distorted and wavefolded sounds.

I took audio notes on my phone, humming melodies, thinking of what modules can be used to give life to those virtual instruments. Arranging some progression. And finally spent a few hours patching away. It was a very productive morning.

In the end, I am very happy with how things turned out. I have a new visual system I can work on in the future, learned quite a few new techniques, and proofed some old ones.

What I got out of this and what I wanted to share with you is that if presented with opportunities, you should probably go for it. You should not be afraid to take some risk, doing (new) stuff and changing habits.

That's how we progress after all...

Cheers!

This is my set from Modular On the Spot 8 here in Seattle, with Nick Bartoletti on visuals. I'm still learning to incorporate the 4ms sampler into my 7u. Melodic/arpeggio-y stuff with dogs barking at the end

Techno-oriented live set from Boston last month which involved, among other things, a 6U Euro case.

My first live performance using a modular. My portable system is a mixed eurorack/5U system. I also used a Digitakt and a microbrute. Here it is, warts and all:

Recorded my first live exploration/sequencing session with my minimal setup:
0-coast, Pittsburgh Modular Lifeforms Helix, Multimode VCA
Sequenced from iPad via CVPal

Would be happy to get feedback on how to get more complexity from just two sequenced tracks with existing gear.
I plan to add ADR or Rise/Fall module to free 0-coast Slope as another VCO for extra voice and modulate VCA with dedicated envelope.

A few words of support for the videos and tracks that people are support. So fucking good to see people getting out there and entertaining, educating and/or frightening the masses.

Fuck, yes! :sb:

And finally getting some new D.Crunk action.
