Anyone familiar with how this album was made, mostly on a computer or?

I believe his main MO is software, yes. If you read interviews he always mentions some mystery hardware distortion/filter thing, but I’d say the majority of his sound is all software.

If that’s the case he’s very much a master of restraint.

probably heavy processing of guitar with MAX/MSP and like murch33 was saying, some custom effect thingy.

Yep, he basically uses one Max/MSP patch for everything. (read that in an interview forever ago)

And his instrument/sound source is guitar. Guitar into Max?Msp is what he has talked about in interviews.
I really like this album as well.

I believe that and the earlier albums were exclusively made using ppooll.

I just started listening to Endless Summer. These two albums, really eclipse his contemporaries...whatever genre he is considered, noise, glitch whatever, most else I’ve heard which sounds similar just feels so sterile and lifeless in comparison.

Those albums were mostly guitar sampled onto an Ensoniq ASR-10 I believe. The ASR can do some crazy resynthesis of sampled sounds.

Just wanted to add that the ASR-10 is one of the most lively, fat sounding samplers ever made. Tons of character and presence in everything form the converters, transposition, and effects. After that he started getting into using computers and you can definitely hear the difference.

Fennesz is a masterful artist...was set to see him here in NY until the virus. Agora (latest record) is really great...not as immediate as Endless Summer but it's grown on me.

Thanks for the information. Venice and Endless Summer remind me of both Philip Jeck and Nuno Canavarro, wildly different artists I know, but evokes similar feelings in me.

@jimfowler thanks for the heads up, see the show might happen at a later date. Can’t stand going to Bushwick but that looks like a very cool venue.

On stage he always had that Line 6 red pod multieffect thing along with the powerbook, so I'd say that's that.

I’m sure that’s part of his rig, but the mystery distortion box is something that was custom made. He talks about it in this interview: https://www.tinymixtapes.com/features/christian-fennesz

Is it me or is the melody on this:

very reminiscent of this:
