Ring Modulation and Drum Machines

Post by Alex Goldman » Wed Apr 07, 2021 10:21 am

Hi there, long time lurker, first time poster.

I have been trying to come up with interesting and practicular uses for ring modulation lately, and one of the things I've been thinking about is ring modulation on drum machines. I love anything that can crusty up a drum sound. I saw this video of someone using a Mad Rooster PRM-1 to ring mod a drum machine and it piqued my interest.

Alas, I don't have a dedicated ring mod module, so I tried running a drum machine through my intellijel quad vca and using the sine/triangle wave output of the MakeNoise STO as my CV input. It sounds crusty but not quite how I'd want it to. I was wondering if anyone had advice for good ring modulation patches that you can use to make drums sound insane.

Also, can anyone explain in not too technical a fashion the difference between passive and active ring modulation? Thanks

Back in my Jeskola Buzz days I often combined beats and speeches through a ring modulator. You get a steady beat but the timbre of each hit varies based on the speech pattern.
Somewhat unorthodox electro on my old trusty Monomachine. :boba:
