Sounds like FM8 or the like to me. Certainly some sort of distorted FM.

its a rather frequently used fm sound in jump up drum and bass. this means everybody owns it, could mean fm8 since its pretty common i bet. thanks. i want to do this with modular. sound pretty simple, i wonder how close i could get. any suggestions?

i wonder if braids, if i fm the pitch would sound similar.

Probably lots of ways to do it. My first thought was the Happy Nerding FM AID. The below video is for the 5U version but it comes in eurorack format as well:

these tones are easy to acheive using my digitone and other fm modules and some cross fading utilities

My synth passions are reined in by my synth reason. It's nothing but synth super ego over here.

most of this is probably 2 op fm stacks (layers) that are harmonically related and crossfaded then distorted. some combo of the above with other minor stuff thrown in. im still experimenting. sweet spots are elusive and tube distortion seems to be useful. i bet any distortion would bring its signature to the sound

I pretty much always use parallel processing when making these kinds of distorted basses. not everyone does but I do. I know some other producers do. compare that bass you posted to pretty much everything in this pendulum track. I like to low pass filter one of the signal copies. then high pass filter the other copy with processing before and after. it is good to put an EQ before each distortion. this is similar to how off the shelf guitar distortion pedals work anyway. the EQ after the distortion is there because I only want to take the best parts of each channel strip.

most of what i was looking for can be done with my new humble audio quad operator, no sweat. im having good results using my preenfm2 as well. most any fm with decent flexibility can do these sounds. aaah audio rate modulation!
