Quoth Hidden Mix sound.

Post by timott » Mon Feb 24, 2020 6:00 pm

Hi everyone,
It's my first post on MW! (Been a lurker for a while)
I love the track quoth (hidden mix) by Aphex Twin.
I have been trying to figure out how to reproduce one of the sounds in that track for a while. It's the first sound you here in the track, that runs throughout it, with delay.
In the youtube comment for that track, someone was amazingly able to recognize it as a sample from a spaceship in the TV show Space 1999. You can hear it at 27:41 here -

Any ideas on how to reproduce this sound? Do you think I can do it with an MS20 or another synth, or do you think the original sound (from the tv show) is a sample being processed too?
Thanks!

Nice, you found the source. 8-)
I think a Studio 440 might have had a role in this sound too.

I don't hear it as being the same sound in the TV clip.

I think MS20 is a good guess. Maybe sampled into a FZ-10M and run hot through the Casio's filter for that crackly distortion.

SH-101 can also make that kind of grainy sound when you modulate the filter with the noise source. Could be that sampled and layered with a white noise burst.

Found this

Have revisited Surfing on Sine Waves recently and really enjoying it.
Trying to work out how the 808 Tom line was made on Polygon window. and whether or not each voice was tuned and step sequenced or Sampled? Very subtle but effective

Pitched 808 sounds would most likely have been from the Roland R-8 w/ Electronic card.
