Composing with Notationprogram

Post by Luznad » Sun Apr 05, 2020 6:30 am

Hello There

I really like to write music classical with a notationprogram. (I do arrangements for a Marchingbrassband)

Now i havnt found a way to write music on a notationprogram and then send the information directly to my modular.

on the modularside of things are modules like the Intellijel Midi ins. think thats not the mainproblem? there are also modules with 4 miditracks.

but is there a program where i can classicly write the notes down and then send them directly via midi to, lets say, 4 voices?
(i tryed "reason" as program but dont like the "bars" to write down melodies.)

thanks for help in advance

I think every notationsoftware can output midi.
Sibelius, Finale, Musescore (free)
The downside of a pure notation software is the missing automatation.
In Logic you can switch between the piano-roll and note-view.

If you wanted to do four voices, unfortunately, you are going to need 4 midi-to-cv modules. Everything is mono, and one cv output will output to one voice.
I use the MOTU 128 midi express and output control from Sibelius, you just need to assign the midi channels to each instrument (violin<< midi 1, cello <<midi 2, piano <<midi 3). Everything will be monophonic though.

I'll usually notate with Sibelius and compose with OpenMusic or just by hand out of a notebook, then the score gets dumped into Sibelius and then output to modular, when I want to go that route, sequencing from a computer. Otherwise I'll use MAX, an MPC, or a modular sequencer (which I prefer if I am making repetitive music).

Hope that answers your question.

Oh, I forgot, but you could also get the polyend. I am not a fan of it though, I prefer separate midi inputs for each voice/instrument. It's just my preference though.

* Reaper can switch between score and piano roll, too.
