RB1-robotto, development closed and opensourced!

Post by soundmachines » Thu Jul 26, 2012 4:32 pm

Dear all,
let's talk about the first module in the soundmachines range.
We talked briefly about it in the eurorack forum here at muff a couple of weeks ago.

Image

You see here the last design proposal. I dig the red insert at the bottom!! You will recognize our modules on a modular from half a kilometer away :)

Robotto is a kind of a modular singing voice, controllable in pitch vowel and consonant. It is based on a Babblebot chip (a pre-programmed PIC) and an Atmel ATMEGA.

Two years ago I made a proto, at home, as a sunday afternoon project. I did a YT video raising some interests... Some people asked me if I will sell those modules.
At the time there was not the option to do that and so it boiled down pretty quick, dispersed in too many projects…

Now, with soundmachines on the table, I decided to give it a go, and actually presenting it as the first product of the brand.

But there is some more stuff that could be interesting.

Babblebot is similar to Speakjet, its more famous sibling, but is more focused on sound generation. Actually it is a pretty interesting sound engine (the former name was SoundGin), capable of modulations and polyphony.

I built my first Robotto writing code on an Arduino (another italian breakthrough! :)) and I decided to make the module open source.

YES, Robotto is an opensourced project.

There is an embedded Arduino on the module (16MHz ATMEGA328) and I just decided to bring to through hole pads the unused pins. :)
Moreover we also put a programming connector on the back of the pcb. This connector is compatible with the Sparkfun FTDI Basic Breakout 5V (from the IDE you can see it as an Arduino PRO, 5V, 16MHz)
The module will be sold fully assembled.

I hope that this stems lots of people playing with the module and maybe making it something different!! The sourcecode will be downloadable form the website.

Everything hardware.

Just to give you some insight into the development process, please take a look at the following pic:

Image

This is a screencap of Altium Designer (our schematic and pcb design tool) that shows a near completed RB1 robotto printed circuit board.
This is the 3D visualization window. You can see the pots, the microcontroller (QFP32), the PDIP Babblebot, the 3.5mm jacks. This is NOT a fancy view, or a simple rendering. This is really important to check for interferences, 3D dimensions and matching with other pieces of hardware (enclosures, panels, cabling, etc..).
This afternoon Marco, the pcb designer, was showing me some open points and we were checking that all the panel components (pots, jacks, switch and lightpipe) were aligned and in the correct positions.

That's all Folks!
Davide

This will be a definite purchase for me.
Will it be available fully assembled?
Will keep my eyes open for this one in the future.

Awesome!!!

I'm a little confused how you will be selling this...

is it in kit form and assembled form?

WE ARE ALMOST THERE!!!!

PCB are coming in next week. We will assemble 10 modules and test those.
Steel will arrive about 15th, then laser cut, then silkscreening.
in 4 weeks we should have the first 10 made.
In 3 weeks we will have a simple website to show you what we are up to and to buy stuff if you are in europe.

Right now we are defining the packaging for RB1.

In the meantime other TWO modules are under development:

RC1 radiostar
DC1 drumcomputer

(see other posts where I published some 'renderings' of the panels)

cherrrrrrrrrrrs!

I feel deeply understood by this module. Great choice of colours and layout, too!
