curious if anyone has tried to recreate functionality of one of these self contained chaos filter pinging boxes? how would you go about patching it up?

Yup! This was my very crude attempt, controlling pinged filters with shift registers and modulating the rhythm with a comparator.

I think the main thing is to start with a self-resonant filter that you set to a "pingable" state. Turn the resonance up to just before it self-oscillates, and then send a gate or trigger to the filter input to "ping" it. The modules I used are listed on Soundcloud but honestly I don't remember the details of the patch. I also didn't use a touch interface (that the WingPinger has) for this patch. I know that he has elaborated and changed the description of the instrument a bit. Last time I checked, he mentioned shift registers (and the Benjolin Rungler) and comparators.
