Has anyone done a deep dive into pulsar synthesis?

Post by 3hands » Tue Feb 25, 2020 7:00 pm

I have an Orgone Accumulator and am looking to start experimenting with the Pulsar synthesis. Has anyone done a deep dive into it, and if so, is there any pros/cons I need to be aware of going into it?

Cheers!

Short answer - not me. But I had a look and I cobbled this together from other recent posts in these fora, and things coming out my own brane.

Audio rate square triggering a grain using your granular module of choice
Granular out to input A of a crossfader
Input B of crossfader left empty
Audio rate square multed to CV in of crossfader
Use PWM of the square to adjust your S time

That's the first thing that occurs after literally five minutes of being introduced to the concept of pulsar synthesis. I haven't read much more than an idiot's guide, but it could be interesting.

Doesn't Disting Mk.4 have a pulsar oscillator of some kind?

Somehow I've never heard of Pulsar Synthesis. What's special about it?
From what I'm reading and watching, it seems to be a special case of granular synthesis.

Anyways, bumping for interest.

This may not be the most useful or convincing example 8-)

Saw it. Raised more questions than it answered.

Thanks for the responses! I’m planning on sitting down on Saturday and diving in. Will post results, and some audio clips ASAP.

The one who has dug deep into pulsar synthesis is obviously Curtis Roads, who seems to be responsible for coining the term. It's described in his book Microsound.
