Help Me Patch! A Quarantine Exercise

Post by vonkillbot » Mon Mar 16, 2020 11:32 pm

Beginner and apparently going to be at home until April with a ton of time on my hands. I'm having a killer time playing with my small synth but want your ideas to help me learn! Give me some patch ideas so I can see how things work!

try making a compressor out of just maths:

theory - signal in is sent through an env follower, then a rectifier and then inverted - this cv is used to reduce the gain of a vca in the main signal path by having any peaks in signal making the cv reduce the gain of the vca.

in practice - maths as a compressor by itself. audio in to in 1, set the level with top middle knob, threshold is set by knob 2 with nothing patched to it. OR out to in 3 which is then inverted, send out 3 to channel 4's both input and audio in, and finally take out 4 as the output.

How about using maths as a dual sound source?
never used maths, but i'm thinking you can do this with any function generator that tracks V/oct and goes into audio range.

a single side of maths will generate anything from a saw through triangle to ramp ( and further shaping with log/exp settings) set one to have zero attack and a specific decay, and the second one to zero decay and a similar specific attack. one will output a saw and the other a ramp (inverse saw) if both are tuned to the same frequency, the mix of the two will be a gnarly PWM like sound where the slight pitch offsets determine the speed of the PWM. Now play around with log/exp and other modulation to output a world of weird gnarly waveforms. You can get some great basses like that.

a tuner and some kind of oscilloscope would help in this experiment. There's a free plugin called s(M)exoscope i've been using.

google "maths illustrated manual"

30 something different ways to patch Maths - should keep you going for a few days

I'm intending on revisiting it too
