New PAiA 9700-series modules

Of the six that I bought, I finished five of them last night, between 7:00pm and 9:30pm. They're very easy to build - usually no more than a dozen parts to solder(jacks & pots, maybe a couple of other components), because it's mostly pre-soldered surface mount.

Here's what you get in the Noise Source kit:


All of the kits are pretty similar to this, and they're all approximately the same size PCB, for those curious about module depth and whatnot.

Here is the finished module:

Is the power header one of the parts that you solder yourself?

i like how they included mounting holes even though using them with their panels and configurations dont require that

thanks glacial23, just as I thought these should be really easy to banana up. I was hoping the jacks came unattached to the boards, which looks like the case w00t

With the noise gen. the site says it can be reconfigured to use a Zener instead of a transistor for the noise, which one did you go for?

It came with the Zener, so that's what I used. In the documentation, it says it comes shipped with one or the other. hmmm.....

I should really wire up a .156->.100 power cable and try some of these out...

The description of the noise module on the PAiA site gave me the impression
that the transistor was always used, and that the zener diode was optional.
I could be wrong though.

In either case, it would be cool to put a switch on the front panel to bypass the zener diode for a different noise flavor.

And echoing what DGTom said about looking good for bananafication.
(note that some other modules are likely to have some normalisation - but we know that adding switches often improves things anyway!)

Do they come with schematics? Particularly interesting to see if any changes are need really to run off 'standard' frac +/-15v rather than the Paia choice of local +/-12v regulation (you can see the 3812 and 3912 on the PCBs - you can probably remove or short these out for running direct off 15v supplies)

Per brief recent discussion on Analogue Heaven, the user will need to supply a connector for the desired power supply. For example, to connect to a Blacet PS500/505/PSCONN, you will need a compatible 4 pin female connector for each kit you build.

I just got my Paia modules preassembled (since work keeps me almost exclusively busy), and the power cable was pre-assembled with a Paia-end mini female 4 pin connector (same voltage order as Blacet) with 4 unstripped lead wires. The wires were about 22" long--good length for those used to the standard Blacet power cables in their racks.

I can join the chorus about outstanding price and quality, and these do represent a change from the multifunctional modules in the base 9700 kits. To be fair, the pre-amp and the envelope modules together have less functionality than a Blacet 2225 I/O, but as someone who hacked a Blacet I/0 kit for a 1U module to preamplify external inputs, the Paia 9754 Preamplifier is a much simpler solution.

Not BTW, the preassembled modules come with an updated version of the familiar Paia assembly instructions. For someone who spent many wondeful hours absorbed in assembling 9700 system kits, the "Assembly and Using Manual" brought a little mistiness to aging eyes (without the solder fumes). Fitting tribute to John Simonton and his legacy!

So these will run fine off of a PS500 correct, as long as they have the right headers???

Just got mine today. I'm not a DIY guy, and this is going to sound remarkably stupid, but where can I get the right headers, and what is the technical name for them? Can they be purchased at say, radio shack? I'd like to get these up and running as soon as humanly possible, so that I can contemplate ordering more, because quite honestly, these prices kick ass.

Do you mean the headers for the unstripped ends of the power wires to connect to a Blacet type distro board? If so, you need to look for MTA-156 type housings like this:

But bear in mind you may need a special tool to get the wires in the housing - I'm not too sure as I've never made my own.

Personally, I would think the easier way would be to not bother fitting the Paia header on the PCB, get a normal Blacet power lead, and cut off one end - then you can solder the unstripped wires into the PCB rather than having to make up a housing to connect to the pwr supply.

That's exactly what I mean. If anyone could shed more light onto this, i'd appreciate it. I'm not a DIY type, and I have no solder skills. I'd also rather not solder anything onto the boards.

I'm curious as to how you crimp a wire in those housings as well. I've got a bunch I'd like to use... very frustrating

Ahh fuck... I am pissed that these came unstriped without headers on the distro end... I ordered a AI bus board when I could have just got Blacet style headers & plugged them into a Blacet PSU...

Where can I get some small PAiA style headers???

Not sure who your local supplier is, but you need to look for 0.1" MTA/Molex headers.

Yeah I don't have a crimper... So I think I am fucked. I basicaly have to unsolder my male headers off the boards and hard wire the cable to the modules.

You don't need a crimper for the Blacet stuff. I've just strip the ends, tin them, and insert. I've never seen the PAiA joints so seriously, i just don't get it

Can anyone comment on the sound of these new Paia modules?
particularly the preamp and mixer...

When the gain starts to clip, does it sound soft or nasty (in a bad way)?
