Freebie Grain Synth (Mac/PC, AU/VST, 32/64-bit)

Post by Tristana » Thu Dec 07, 2017 2:02 pm

Hey all,

Figured I'd share this here given that it's currently just sitting on my hard drive collecting allegorical dust. For my Computer Science & Music Technology degree, I programmed a granular synthesizer.

current features include
- not having all features yet implemented
- buggy file loading
- not yet optimized code
- minimalist default JUCE UI
- makes really neat noises
- costing a mere $0

it *might* crash your host of choice dependent on some factors not yet isolated, so save / use at your own risk.

Tip if you're seeking tonal sounds: start with a harmonically rich or noisey source sample, such as a crash cymbal.

You can download it here:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/ds57khmsjgy2m ... 0.zip?dl=0

And you can hear some audio examples here:
https://soundcloud.com/tristanspantano/ ... ynthesizer

Have fun!

Cool! Do you have a manual or some other write up so that I can learn more about what is going on?

That's great. I just started working with Juce, always good to see what other folks are making.

It's real nice to work with. 'Specially since you don't often have to deal with the specifics of the various supported plug-in formats often, and the AudioProcessorValueTreeState class takes care of much of the nitty gritty of having state saved between sessions as well as param automation.

Thanks for making this, Tristana. I've been having way too much fun. Reaper allows automating anything with a control, so I put LFOs on the Loop Start and Grain size and loaded samples from the old HG Fortune archives, and immediately scared the crap out of myself.

Very cool.

Works in Audiomulch 2.0 on OSX in case that was untested so far. Used Tidal-MIDI to sequence. Immediately cool weirdness ensued!

Neat! I'm curious what the next page goes on to say.

Wish they'd gotten in touch with me first, though. Also, I'm not a 'he' >.>

Seeing this ported over to VCV Rack would be a dream come true. That said, it's fun in Ableton. Haven't tried Logic because it usually uses AIFFs.

Huh? Has nothing to do with Logic. The days of Logic only being able to work with AIFF and SD2 are looooooooong gone, and even then, that was only your output files after recording or bouncing. If a plugin works with multiple formats, its the plugin, not the DAW that limits that.

Ok, I was at the supermarket again the other day, so I got some more shots for you. Here's the rest of the text:

I'm quite curious how those incomplete links are supposed to function in a print article.

I'm also a bit miffed that I've received no response to my message to them asking for an erratum.

Hello there!

I signed in to this forum simply for this plugin! I read about it on CM and, despite the somewhat misleading links given, I managed to find myself here! Anyway, I've tested it out the plugin and there are some points of feedback I want to give...
  • The audio quality of the samples put into the granulizer seems to be reduced. I have no idea how DSP works, but is this a measure to save memory?
  • I often found myself wanting an envelope controlling the loop start
  • Having a gradual attack and release on the grain would make it easier to create smooth, ethereal sounds, I'd wager
  • I wish I could drag'n'drop samples on the plugin, and it would load automatically
As you said, it's not finished yet, so I'm very curious what the finished product will be

Hello,

nice to meet you and other forum members. Like Subspace Jet Witch I've just signed to this forum to get and try your work - imagine, that in Polish version of Computer Music - "Estrada i Studio", where some texts are original and some are reprinted and translated from Eng. there is also this one, and unfortunatelly you are mentioned as "he" too...

Anyway, congratulations and if I would achieve some good effects with your plugin I'll post on this thread for sure to get your feedback.

All the best!

I guess that shows you how long I've been using it, and how much I haven't bothered to re-ask that question because the answer was always the same in the past. Times change, and we don't always keep up as best we should. Such is my case here. *shrugs

Hi Tristan,
Somebody previously asked if a manual or guide was available but the link appears to have been removed. Is one still available please?
Cheers! Great synth. Easy to use and get stuck in. -Chris
Edit: Scrap that, link has now appeared now I'm a member. DOH!

Hey there! Found this this morning and I'm happy I did. I've been learning a bit about DSP myself and really like this plugin. Have you by any chance posted the source code for this on github? I would love to take a closer look at what you've got going on here. It's great! 8-)
