Macro Oscillator in 5U (THT based on "Plaits")

MU version

Based on the Eurorack module "Plaits" invented by Émilie Gillet, licensed under the CC-by-SA-3.0:
https://mutable-instruments.net/modules/plaits/open_source/

The first modules are now built and working:

It's a shame, but it seems I'm still under 100 posts, so not formally allowed to offer stuff here. Please PM or contact me over at Facebook https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100008336080650

Seems I've to get much more chatty ;-) nanners

DIY Panel / PCB sets are available.
Mostly THT, 4-layer PCB is containing the UI elements.

PCB either presoldered or not.
Panel is optional.

love Beautiful looking build! thumbs up

If you remove the letter "s" from the "https://" of the video URL the embedding will work:

It's interesting that someone else recently made a batch of 5U Plaits, mainly for his own use. He use mostly SMT. Details here:

Thanks John!

Kudos to yourself, I've always enjoyed watching and listening to your videos!

In case you're still into MOTM, there will be an second version, I hope it's ready for assembly & testing in a couple of weeks.

Good to know, thanks for the suggestion!

The layout is pristine!! Both modern and mindful of the 5U tradition. The full-size knobs and text labels for all synthesis models are a huge improvement.
And did you guys noticed the perfectly aligned hexagonal nuts?

Now the question remains, what will you port next? Tides or Stages perhaps?

eek! lol haha, I missed that but I did think it was overall looking really sharp! thumbs up
JanneI
Interested! Any change for pcb only -option? I'd like to make custom panel. Thanks!

Thank you! Mr. Green
That's balsam on my soul after half a year of work.
Like a good friend of mine used to say:

Those really look interesting!
Which would you like to see first?

Currently I'm planning to build a dual oscilloscope module.
From time to time, I really like to see what's going on, also visually.

Yes, PCB (4-layer ENIG)

Word of caution: The STM32 QFP-48 chip is very hard to hand solder and it's very easy to lift/destroy pads and damage the PCB beyond repair.
Remembering my first attempts of I've destroyed a couple of PCBs myself until I bought a reflow soldering station.
Of course I don't know about anyone's soldering skills, but I just wanted to outline this as I didn't expect it myself to be this hard back then.

So if someone's new to tiny nasty SMT stuff and still want to go this route, I'd very much recommend practicing on Patrick's great EDU PCBs:
Patrick SMD EDU PCB
AFAIK he also offers kits.

It looks very nice! It's a shame the pcb is as wide as it is - it would be nice to be able to use it in MOTM format. (edit: missed the part about there being a smaller version soon!)

And it's my job as a moderator to inform you that you can't sell directly here (via PM's) with under 100 posts. You'll need to do it via your web page. Please edit your previous posts accordingly. Sorry, - the rules - https://www.muffwiggler.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=34546

sduck, like I mentioned there will be a smaller version with a different PCB.
Also with MOTM style panels (3mm, powder coated, etc etc).

Here's an image of the prototypes in comparison:

I think Tides are a bit more universal (being both modulation and a sound source) and there's nothing quite like it in MU right now.
It looks like it would need 3U of space.

Thanks for letting me know! From a quick glance yesterday, of those two I've also preferred that one. But really I'll have to study those modules in detail.

Like I said, MOTM is totally under construction,
but I can show you one of the built paper prototypes,
that's nowhere near final, fonts are complety differnt etc,
but just to give an impression.

I didn't even notice your low post count, too busy looking at your sexy panels! eyes...

Come hang out in the 5U section, there is usually something interesting to chat about and it's one of the most friendly corners of the Muff Wiggler empire! cool

I am thinking about getting a PCB with the presoldered SMD ICs and then source the THT parts locally and make a panel for it but the more i look at it the less i am sure that i could drill a plexi panel accurate enough for this one.

Martin, your build is so well done. I enjoy it immensely.

One thing to consider, the Dotcom power connector specifies pin #2 socket as keyed (blocked with a plastic plug). This means, you should always cut pin #2 on the pcb header, otherwise you won't be able to insert a keyed power connector.
EOTS
Thanks for your kind words Abel!
Glad you like it thumbs up

Oh yes, sorry, forgot to remove pin 2 this in the first two builds.
Will remove the pin from the PCB footprint of the next version, so it can't be forgot in the future.
LED-man
Let me know the costs of:
MU pcb and Panel
MOTM PCB and Panel

Thx.

Have you considered selling panels and PCBs, maybe even full kits, though a company like https://synthcube.com/ ?

Just to mention it, prebuilt is also possible,
in case someone is interested, please just send me a PM.

Hi Martin,

the MOTM version looks great. Any chance to get a PCB with pre-soldered SMD parts? I feel too old for this tiny stuff. wink

Greets from Vienna!

Just checking to see if you happen to have finished a full Mouser cart. I need to finally order all my components so a cart would be helpful.

Thank you

Thank you EOTS, don't stress too much about it. I just was asking if you happen to have it done yet that's all. As mentioned in many posts I am still fairly noobish and get a little anxiety with just ordering components just from a BOM. I am always afraid I am not ordering the exact right component and don't know enough to always tell.

Thanks again

No problem, wanted to get to it anyway.
Thanks for the reminder!

So I guess you would prefer resistors also to be included?

Hi, here's the mouser project for the MU v1.2 version.
https://www.mouser.at/ProjectManager/ProjectDetail.aspx?AccessID=f160e de3b9

Please NOTE:

  • STM32 and LDO are listed in the project, not needed if you've getting the presoldered v1.2 version
  • Pushbuttons SW1/SW2 have to be ordered via TME (see BOM)
  • Alpha Potentiometers 10k lin have to be ordered otherwhere (Banzai, Smallbear, ...)
  • Cables are not explicitly listed, I assume you'll already have 22 AWG multistrand for other projects, and RG174AU coax wire for audio
  • M3 hardware is not explicitly listed except for the hex nuts (see BOM)

Nice! I just ordered all my components from Mouser for my build (Thanks for the Mouser cart again Martin). Unfortunately the 1/4" jacks are out of stock. Mouser is projecting at getting some in by the end of Sept. I ordered the lighted buttons from TME in which they usually carry the 1/4" jacks too but they were also out of stock with a predicted restock of many months,.

Not sure what the deal is unless some manufacturer ordered 10's of thousands of them from everywhere. seriously, i just don't get it

Anyway, beautiful addition JLR thumbs up
EOTS
Hi,

thanks guys :-)

@SynthConMeo: you could order Switchcraft 112APCX (Mono, Switched, PCB Pin Termination Style). They cost more but are considered superior.

On the jacks, I would think that there would be a substitute that would work, like maybe a Neutrik or Switchcraft? Taking a look I even found the Amphenol ACJM-MN-2S which has the only difference (that I can tell) being it has a star washer instead of the built in anti-turn prongs. They are in stock at Mouser, maybe Martin can advise you if those will work OK?
