[ SYNCUSSION SY-1M BACK IN STOCK - FOR THE LAST TIME ]

Post by satindas » Thu Feb 06, 2020 8:16 am

Hi All,

The currently available batch of Syncussion kits will be the last !
It was brought to my attention that the MHS122K SPST switch is now out of production and Mouser/Digikey have zero stock.

Fortunately, I managed to grab enough of the MHS123K SPDT switch which is now included in the kit.(The only difference from the MHS122K is a redundant, center "OFF" position).

Also, in order to make the boards easier to solder I have gone for a HASL finish.
This should mitigate the issues causesd by ineffective solder joints as was quite common with the ENIG boards.

That's odd- I get no search result for MHS122K on Farnell... when did you see that they had stock?
The only one of the same series I see in stock at the moment is the MHS233K.

There are about 85 kits left at the moment. 65 gone already from this batch.

I’d like to chime in here and offer up a huge thanks to Simon for making this a thing. I’ve enjoyed building and using the SY-1M and look forward to your next projects. Much respect.

Thanks for the kind words Jim, always nice to hear that people are enjoying the kit :)

Not had experience with either of those suppliers but definitely worth looking at... Bookmarked, thanks ;)

FWIW, another possibility:

...not a site I’ve ever used, but you never know where there might be a few thousand sitting on a shelf.

How much, roughly, do all the components in the BOM come to? Been wanting to build this, but curious how much I'd be looking at all-in.

The mouser BOM is like 175, I think there are are few things that are not in there + the kit , shipping etc.. its right around $500

Slightly off topic, but does anyone know if the MHS122K will fit an original syncussion? Mine is missing one S&H switch and I'd like to solder in a replacement

Looking at the schematics it seems there's an easy mod and get use of the center off switch for S&H. Instead of just disconnecting the LFO you could use one switch contact for the normal LFO input and the other leg feeding white noise into the S&H instead. Some trace cutting I bet but not difficult.

I haven't used an SY-1 but it seems odd to not have proper random modulation. What is the purpose of the S&H sampling the LFO?

Sorry, I know that this is slightly off-topic, but just got a Michigan Synthwork SYN0.5 module and can't help but feel that I'd get a lot more mileage out of it if the LFO were either syncable, or there was a method of plugging an external LFO signal into the unit to replace the internal one (maybe one method is easier than another?).

After having built the bigger units described in this thread, can anyone comment on whether it would be difficult (in principle) to modify a module to accept an external LFO signal or to have the internal one made clockable through an external reset/trigger? Maybe through addition of some type of expander if the components wouldn't fit in the module itself?

I know nothing about circuits and solder and don't really want to go there, but it might be worth attempting if it's straight-forward enough.

Thanks.

It would be easy to add external CV replacing the LFO around the waveform selector switch. You could pick one of the outputs to run out to a socket, with nothing plugged in it would use the internal LFO but as soon as you plug in it's replaced. Resetting the LFO is a bit harder and would require some testing.

Thanks PaperCUT. Might investigate further and give that a go at some point. Will let you know if I manage.

I’m selling a completed unit if anyone is interested. It’s listed in the for sale section. Rev 2, barely used, perfect condition, £700. I’ll even throw in a spare set of slide switches (some of which are now obsolete).

Cheers
