In the end after meticulously building I had an issue that was only tracked down by Derek that involved one bad transistor in the PSU section of Board A.
How did Derek track it down? Was it sending tons of emails back and forth or did you actually send him your unit?
Further I am curious of the faulty transistor was delivered faulty or if you actually fried it while soldering?
I'm extremely careful soldering so it must have been a dud transistor or maybe even out of spec. As one wiggler noted, these units are very particular regarding components and subtle spec variations. But yes in the end I was stumped and it was easier to just send the populated boards to Derek. He was very prompt and communicative as he tested and noted that it was the hardest problem to find in all his days working with these so I didn't feel too bad

Yes, I am buildidng one too. Got all parts now besides the matrix.
There seem to be not too many people around here doing it
There's a facebook builders group up now... I heard the matrix are still on hold. did you get yours?

I've built one. Will chime in with any tips if I can!
Thanks. I still wonder if I'm doing it right, but ok so far.

I'll be building a Cloney; probably won't start till I receive the Matrix.

I finished a Synthi a few years ago using Derek Revell's original boards(which took me almost a decade all told). It was a bear to finally get working properly, and I have issues with it to this day due to some inferior parts I elected to use (mainly the card connectors, but also the vernier dials and joystick).

If I could give myself some advice beyond that, I'd say spend as much time as needed to plan out the wiring paths so that they reproduce the neat tidy paths employed by EMS, use multicolored wires so it's easy to tell what's what (when you have a million wires all meeting up in one place.

I've been wondering myself why there isn't a Cloney topic here on Muffs yet. It should probably be started in the DIY section. There is a Derek Revell/Synthi topic there already, but I think a separate VCS3-type build topic is warranted.
That is exactly where I am now. Wiring. I have all the boards and PSU done, and am considering the wiring. The unshielded was pretty easy, though I should have left more slack. I'm keeping colours consistent and bundling things up with velcro (for the moment).

I'm thinking of doing all the 12/9/0V stuff in solid wire and bend it all to look sane and nice, but I'm not 100% sold on that one.

So started building the Cloney today.. first steps.
It's a massive project, populating the PCBs and all the mechanic work is one thing but the wiring is extraordinary! Honestly, I underestimated all the work.
But the quality of parts, panels and the case is phenomenal.
Agreed. The wiring scared me the most so I've left it until last. I *think* I'm beginning to understand it. Have the non-shielded done which taught me a lot. Good luck!

I'm working on my own PCBs, which are period accurate copies of the originals. I grabbed a matrix from ebay a while back which got me into this mess to begin with...

That is beautiful!

I made a issue list on my website for the 2019 Cloney version.
Access is only possible with an account and for Cloney users.
https://www.dsl-man.de/display/DSO/Clon ... nd+support

I’ll give „edit“ permission on my page for every user, feel free to add known issues or other related infos.
Thanks!

Is there a waiting list to get a kit?

hey fellow builders,

I have a question regarding thosee 4x 0.1 uF capacitors which seem to sit directly in the audio path of the filter.
probably this is a veery important part of how the filter will sound.
in my kit there were some very cheap and small ceramic capacitros.
does it make any sense to swap these out for better ones or maybe even some NOS capacitors to get a nice vintage sound?
and if so, what would you suggest? styroflex? polypropylene?
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Those *are* the same as the originals. If you want *this synth's* vintage sound,m just use them. After that, you're in virgin territory, so let the capacitor sound games begin!

FWIW, the ARP2500 1006 ladder filter also used similar ceramic disc caps. Nothing special about the caps in many minimoogs either.

So on the "vintage sound" question, I think you're ok using what you have.

Well pictured is an actual original EMS.. it was just meant to be symbolic.
In my clone I have very small ceramic caps like these:

Thanks for the head-up !
Thats an interesting read and interesting in general in terms of what I can mod in my clone :)
Thank you

Unfortunately, there are no more Cloney kits available. I don't know who might be doing it now, if anyone.
