Continuing the discussion of peripherals - what else do you guys augment your systems with? in addition to the usual synths/mixers/effects...

I've found a video matrix switcher to be invaluable when running a lot of stand-alone devices. Something like Extron MAV or a Kramer unit is worth buying - good quality and clever features.

Also, very cheap security cameras are fun for mixing/keying in live use - the ones I bought (cheap Chinese stuff from ebay) do wired and wireless from the same camera and the wireless receiver uses analogue tuning which is great to slightly untune for added fuzz/glitch. The automatic brightness circuitry is really slow so gives good effect when stage lighting flashes on/off.

As an additional input, I keep a bunch of videos on my phone and pack an A/V cable for it. Can also stream YouTube videos if you feel the need. Will buy an ipod touch for this purpose soon enough, less liability!

As for peripherals, I love the camera-mount adapters for microphone stands! I have a couple of boom mic stands and a short tabletop stand I use all the time. Mic stands can be wobbly, but they're very convenient, don't take up much space, are cheap, and probably more rugged/giggable than cheapo tripods within the same price point.

I use a couple of different types of camera to capture footage. Pxl 2000, color and black & white ccd cams, a hd helmet cam that has a slight wide angle to it.

I also use lighting and projection and process that.

Security camera switcher to do mirrored and kaleidoscopic effects. Also, crappy Videonics-type home VHS editing equipment can be useful to boost contrast and such in images. Also handy for chaining amongst themselves in feedback loops.

I was looking at those things, but ended up recently getting a couple of table top tripods with "spider" legs (similar idea but more like rubber coated gooseneck legs), and a couple of C-clamp tripod mounts.

have you played any videos on this yet? it looks like it does 8 frames a second? I can't get any videos properly encoded to play on this thing yet :(

Resurrecting a thread to let you know that I just picked one of these guys up. They're getting blown out at $20 with free shipping.

It's a multiformat card reader that will display stills and some encodings of video (MPEG-1, MJPEG). Outputs RCA. It has a slideshow mode with a few transitions.

I really just needed something that I could use to feed stills into my video modular for processing, and it looks like this will fit the bill, with some bonus features thrown in.

Which codecs are you using? MPEG-1 and MJPEG is pretty specific.

Nope. It's sitting at work waiting to be retrieved tomorrow. I'll try some stuff when I get it home.

yeah it does seem very specific. I tried using ffmpegx to convert to what I thought was mpeg-1 but it is a format I know almost nothing about. seems outdated maybe or something, similar to VCD format maybe?

It's very picky about its file formats. I had a JPEG with an embedded color profile and it couldn't read it. I had to take it into Photoshop and re-export it as a JPEG to get it to load.

On another note (probably more directed towards Lars), I can't seem to get this thing to sync correctly with my system. The image scrolls horizontally no matter what position the external sync switch is in. It locks fine when directly plugged into my capture device, but running through the VSG makes it all scrolly.

I messed around with it and I grabbed a bunch of jpeg files and tossed them at it. It played some and not others, the software was unwieldy and it caused me to bust out an old G4 laptop and start setting it up to purely slideshows.

unless someone figures out how to mod it to do something useful, I would suggest passing.

The LZX doesn't like to sync to a source that's far out from the NTSC sync frequency standards. It has a fairly wide range -- any camera or DVD player I've dried is fine -- the only device I have that it doesn't like is a cheapo scan converter I picked up for $30 once. I'm suspecting it's the same problem in this case. You'll need to run the media player thru a video mixer with a TBC or a TBC of some kind, to lock the LZX to it directly it sounds like.

Frustrating, I know!

FWIW, I have a Sony network'ed media player box I paid about $80 for, that plays Netflix via wi-fi and will also play tons of video file formats off of a USB drive port. That works fine as a sync source, and has Composite, Component and HDMI outputs. I think it runs a similar software interface to the PS3.

just found this, it looks way easier to deal with.

In the meantime I am going to pick up some AV cables for iphone as I have an old iPhone as well as an iPad. I think that the iOS player "with its built-in preview monitor" might be a good way to go for playing pre-recorded clips

After my ipod nano ended up in a drink (hah, whoops!) it's time to buy a Touch.
Pretty well convinced they're a great solution and I'd rather pay more for something reliable and versatile than suffer with compromised discount players.

edit: half hour after writing this, my girlfriend just messaged me to say I can use her old iphone for video work. total coincidence love

How would I connect my ipad to the lzx system? Is there a dock connector that outputs to composite video? Or would I need something like this, with an addition vga-> composite converter?

http://www.amazon.com/Digital-AV-Adapter-connector-Manufacturer/dp/B00 4Y12S9W

EDIT:

Just found this: Dock connector to composite

Yep that's what you need. Nick Ciontea here also has some sort of Alesis I/O dock with a video output.

I use these all the time with a bunch of older IOS devices. they work great. I also got some cheaper versions from amazon that work, although when I plug them into my iphones a message saying they won't work comes up. maybe they don't charge or something, I can't remember. I only wish that the IOS device would play the video on its screen while sending video to the composite output. that would be the ultimate in portable video playback for me, as I use 3 iphones to play back clips i made with the LZX into my modified panasonic mx-10 mixer (one through an external TBC)

edit: i can only find 2 of my 3 apple cables so I tried one of the cheap knocksoff I have, and it works fine. I did have to plug in and rotate the iphone to portrait mode and then re-plug but it started to send video once I did that, and it is charging.

Sorry in advance for the extremely noobish question -

Can I use this to connect the s-video out on the CVE to a component input?
