Thanks for share this Tony, nice setup and great set in the main stage also! :deadbanana:

One question, is the modular main out running to ableton through the apogee? I see only one channel working in the a&h mixer... curious about that :hmm:

btw the Basimilus synth lines are :sb:

@kstl

Yes, the audio from modular is running through Ableton via Apogee soundcard.
The reason is that I have the Unify mixer module outputs set up with left channel dry signal, right channel wet so I use the pan on each of the 4 channels as an effects send.
The channel where modular comes into Ableton is then set to mono.

sweet! smart use of the Unity then! I guess you already saw the forthcoming Praga module by Xaoc, looks great for these kind of setups also, but eats more space in the case and would need more inputs for ableton tho

Splendid!
Is that the Mutant bass drum running through-out most of the set?

Love the Burzum-shirt. The link between Black Metal and techno is very interesting to me. Are you a Darkthrone-fan too?
I've been trying to express that link in my music. ( )

@premieklovn

Yes, Mutant Bass Drum running through pretty much the whole set.
When I first got that module I though it was just *ok* but the first time I played it over a soundsystem I realised how great it sounds. Can't really appreciate that from a YouTube clip.
Actually it's not a Burzum shirt, it's a parody Burzum shirt with a scene from Bambi on it- http://store.africanapparelstore.com/product/bvrzvm
I like to poke fun at the whole 'dark' thing that pervades the techno scene I'm involved with. :lol:

No, I'm not into Black Metal, closest I get is Sunn 8_)

@oootini

Yes, it's 'Bee Mask - Vaporware' towards the end of the set.

Full tracklist below. Bear in mind that the modular system is running during the whole set and large section of it are live improvisations.

Psychick Warriors Ov Gaia - Maenad - KK Records
Alexi Delano - Magnetic Lush (Tadeo remix) - Kolon Trax
Lag - Kontrola - Mord
The Exaltics - The New Beginning - Shipwrec
Aphex Twin - AFX 2 - Mighty Force
Sascha Rydell - Thought Disorder - Fachwerk
Lag - Trema - Mord
Photek - Trans - Virgin
Surgeon - Waiting For Me - Counterbalance
Hokusai - Black Rose (Blawan remix) - Source Direct
Surgeon - Badger Bite (redux) - Unreleased
Bee Mask - Vaporware - Room40
Surgeon - Radiance - Dynamic Tension

Funny who you meet on here. :cloud:

@youknowiloveyou

Great set !!
How do you sync your modular to ableton since you don't have a midi interface ?
I'll definitely try to dj and play modular at the same time. Seems really fun, and sounds great.

@Terdjman

I used to use Kenton USB solo and that worked great.

Now I just have an audio recording of a clock pulse playing from an Ableton 'drum machine' and route that to the headphone output of the Apogee soundcard and into the modular. That works great.
I have to delay the audio tracks in Ableton a few milliseconds, but once I've adjusted for that latency it's solid.

-edit-

I remember that I got the idea for that from here-
Controlling the Make Noise Synthesizer With an MPC
http://youtu.be/Ll01kod-AZ0

There's a link to a .WAV file of a clock pulse in the video description.

Thanks for the details.

I was wondering a few things, sorry i am asking for too many questions...

-what are your using the disting for?

-do you have presets on the the trigger riot and switch between them? You trigger the rene with the riot?

-Rene and braids- do you have sequences stored on rene or you just improvise with it? Do you switch braids presets trough your sets?

Could you explain how you plan your live set? Meaning do you make loops of your tracks, use full tracks, or have the tracks split on loops (kick, hh, oh, bass, etc)

Again apologies if im asking for too much details, interested on how you setup things..

Cheers!

In that set I was using the Disting to Sample & Hold mode the sequence coming from the Rene.

I have 1 preset to begin the set with on the Trigger Riot and then mute / un mute and change clock divisions during the set. Yes, I trigger Rene with the Trigger Riot.

I just improvise with the Rene, but I do call up some quantised scales that are stored. I usually switch between Braids presets, can't remember if I did during this set.

I wouldn't call this a live set, to me it's DJ + modular by the fact that I'm mixing other people's music together with the modular. I just kind of interweave full tracks from Ableton with live modular.
I don't plan anything, that's really important to me I just go plug into the vibe and go with that. Incorporating the modular into my performance setup has taken that possibility even further. :love:

This was only the 4th DJ + modular gig I've done and each patch and rack of modules has been a little different.

Thanks Tony. Been listening to your Rinse FM sets and you are the main reason I am getting back into techno!

Great to hear PWOG - Maenad after all this time!
Never heard the Souce Direct remix of Black Rose before.
and love the Bee Mask close to the end!

Seriously outstanding set, Tony. Thanks for sharing the rig. Being only one of a handful of modular integrations, really looking forward to what you come up with next.

On a totally unrelated note, feel free to ignore, any back story on the Best Western hotel sample thats ends side 3 of Force+Form? Have always been curious about such a random sample closing out that side of the record.

I really enjoyed your sett!

It tied together best things from worlds of djing and playing live with the modula, good amount of tweaking yet not lost in the noodling.

And I dont care how much of a fab modulars are now in the boiler room scene, I enjoy them way more than staring a dude smoking a fag trying to desperately look cool while 6min track finishes.

Big up! :tu:
