ms-20

Post by consumed » Sat Jul 26, 2008 5:21 pm

since i was doing a comparison between the ms-20 and the borg i thought i'd record bits of the ms-20 that really showed its filter character. these recordings are absolutely raw with no compression, eq etc.

disclaimer. my chops suck.

God, I don't know what it is exactly, but I just love the sound of the MS-20.

It's definitely not *just* the filter, but that certainly plays its part.

What's up with the 'banned' avatar? I hope you're not... I hope you've not done something foolish... Maybe only use that for really banned people?

Also, I can hear the similarity between the MS-20esque filter in the Vostok & the real MS-20. However, the Korg Oscillators are part of the difference and its charm.

Yeah, that's kinda what I was thinking and hoping. Not to be Mr. Spoiler-of-Fun, but could that avatar be reserved for only those that really have been given the boot? I think that the reasons are obvious? Am I being too persnickety? Probably.

Sorry to have been whiney about that. It helps to have context to someone's posts if I know that they have already been deemed a bad apple. I felt equal parts a 'tool', yet concerned enough about the flow of information within this forum to actually give a shit.

Thanks, consumed!

have you tried sequencing the ms-20 oscillators with an external sequencer?

just curious to compare notes as I got one a few months ago,

I know the scaling standard is different, but I also noticed that regardless of tha t the oscillators seem very drifty. Again I am not noticing that when played with the keyboard or triggering with the sampling and hold, only when trying to change the oscillator cv directly with a sequencer...

but yeah I love the ms-20 sound... is too bad they jsut keep getting more expensive and harder to find and that korg lost its vision on producing original analog instruments in favor of lots of lights and blinking stuff.

Yup, that's an MS20 alright. That and my 808 are in "from my cold, dead hands" territory.

i had an ms-20 for a few years, but then 99% of it's sound and functionality was replaced by my modular (everything except the pitch to voltage conversion in the esp section, now that is cool!)

i was never a huge fan of the filter sound, you can put me more firmly in the moog/oberheim camp. my borg can come close to the sound of the ms-20, but is way more functional and can sound tamer too.

i believe there were two revisions of the ms-20, one with discrete filters and the later version with ic's, although i could be wrong.

there are a load of my programming tips and samples for the ms-20 on ben ward's site here:
