Refinishing a Metasonix unit

Hey guys! I don't post here often, but I love Metasonix gear! So good and crazy!!

I recently won a TM-1 on ebay for a really low price, and funny enough there's another one up right now that may go for close to as low. Anyway, it's pretty beat up on the outside, not that matters, but I was wonder what you guys thought about doing a refinish on a Metasonix.

So I own a small business and do this for a living anyway, so it would look good, and breath a fresh new look into it. Since I got it for so cheap, I figure why not? Unless someone convinces me otherwise.

My plan was to repaint it, maybe Caterpillar Yellow or hell, maybe black, and the laser etch it. I have this big ass laser machine I do pedals with. So it can do lots of cool stuff.

What kind of stuff would you do on it? Besides labeling the controls more clearly? Which is the biggest thing that bothers me.

No offense meant to Metasonix on this either! Please don't think I'm bashing the look or anything. This one has just been loved more than others. smile

Also, this one has no serial number (weird) and doesn't have a stick that says not to remove the back like the others I've had.

Also, if this is just a terrible idea all around, please be nice, but let me know. hahaha

For reference, here's what it looks like.

Not too bad on the back

Not awful

Ouch! Did someone take a hammer to the side?

No #

Front, not terrible. Just a little worn.

Haha 61 views, no replies. Hmmm.

Oh well! I decided to go for it. I'll post results once I'm done. smile

I'm also thinking of switching the TM-1 switch for a pot. Can anyone tell me the value of the pots on the newer ones?

My Activate Ringmod is a switch but I'd love it to be a pot if possible.

Also, I was given the idea to put images from Newgrounds Retarded Animal Babies on it. Haha. Seems appropriate and very Metasonix.

I'm just excited to see what you do with it... and the fact that you do pedal etching too!

That would be awesome!

You could even contact Dave and commission something cool from him.

That is a really, really old one, as in one of the first 25 pieces from 2001. A leftover of our experiment with screenprinting (which is a lot more difficult than you'd think).

There's no serial number because someone erased it, or something. Dunno.

You can refinish it if you want, just as long as you know it was one of the oldest production units. Yes, the activate switch can be replaced with a volume pot--100k or 500k ohms will work. We're assuming you know how to wire a pot for volume/attenuator.

You're talking about this, right?

Hey guys! Thanks for the input! So I left the pot alone just because I figured there's no real point in changing it right now. It sounds perfect as is. smile Plus I was using it with my noise board and I don't need that much control over that value anyway.

I think it turned out great! I removed most of the paint, leaving a rough look to it by putting some grooves in the enclosure with a belt sander. It creates a very nice, and rough texture.

I wanted this project to reflect the product, so the rough look was intentional. Most of my stuff is super clean. Well it depends on what I'm doing really. haha[/img]

Then painted black and white. So here's what I came up with. All art and font, minus the Metasonix logo, were taken from David Lovelace's website.

This is a comic strip from the site. Turned out rough but I love the look!

(borrowed from Butt Probe art. Such great stuff!!)

Thanks for the info! I figured this one was pretty old. It's definitely a keeper. smile

No worries on wiring the pot, I could do it, but elected out of it for the time being. I may change my mind down the road. Haha. I didn't even think to look at the other pot values. They are all 100k. smile Thanks for sharing that with me!!

The one on ebay is the one I'm talking about. I think that's a damn good price! Can't believe they are so cheap. Even at the 299 it is now, it's a steal!

Damn! I didn't even think of doing this!!! Sigh. Oh well!! Maybe the next one!! smile

Wow that looks great kudos! we're not worthy seeing this thread makes me wonder if the Scrotum Smasher I picked up recently on ebay would be able to have the SPDT toggles replaced with pots so you could blend in the feedback loop. Do any of you think it's possible? hmmm.....

nice job.... i like how it turned out.

Great score, nice finish. My gold TM-1 is solely responsible for getting me into modular and it's still in every patch I create.

Looks incredible!!! MY ASS IS BLEEDING

Necro bump!!

I sold this a few years back and am hunting for it. Anyone have any idea where it could be?

Thanks!

Yes sir! I do that sometimes. Sell then regret. :(

I could always buy another one when it pops up, but I really liked how this turned out. If I hadn't been in a bad money situation at the time, I wouldn't have sold it. Actually it seems like that's the only time I sell.

I LOVE the TM series stuff btw. I really want to try some of your euros. I just haven't jumped to that side of things yet. smile I'm still mostly a pedal guy or standalone synth user.

Hey guys!

So I was thinking about redoing my TM2 and TM5.

What do you guys think??

Should I do it or nah?
Kent
Yes and no.
Seems to be both a shame to deface these classic units yet perfectly appropriate for the Metasonix vibe.

Go for it.

Maybe a Happy Tree Friends or Rick and Morty theme, to keep in the spirit of things. Although personally I'd go with "suggestive" MLP pony graphics, I believe Eric already did that with one of his other TM boxes.
metasonix
Yes, MOAR PONY PORN LOL
