4ms Bend Matrix

I wasn't sure where to post this, but i reckon this could be an amazing nerve centre for a modular-

Thanks. Yeah, I've been curious how this might fit into a modular rig. Now that I'm looking over the specs and user manual, I'm pretty sure this is going near the top of my wish list.

I'm intrigued: So it definitely doesn't bother you that these things are the fugliest things ever made by man?

What really weirds me out is the SIZE of this thing!

chips like the intersil cd22m3494 can do all this stuff and don't require much else to function.

I have 5 of the .EZ intersil chips just sitting here, waiting to be brought to life some day: They're digitally controlled 16x8 switch arrays, and they're like 5 bucks a pop.

The specs are very cool, handling signals from DC all the way through video. Power it from both neg and pos and you get that full range of voltage. And since the addres switching is done in binary you can set up a gate generator to do the patching twisted
cebec
I agree. It's not very pretty and it could be a lot smaller but I like the specs and it fills a need I have. Anyone remember the Analogue Solutions 'Synapse'?
sgnhh
So this basically an electronic patchbay with midi? pass
Roycie Roller
I quite like the artwork- it's like 'outsider' or 'folk' art. I think this machine could add a lot to a modular.

Good point. All of their stuff seems to be like that. I've been wanting a matrix mixer and this has two of them plus the patching can be saved, sequenced, and recalled via MIDI. It reminds me of the Buchla 210e and 225e combination:

I've been wanting something similar for eurorack as well. Some kind of matrix mixer with a certain number of patch memory slots, and can have CV control of switching memory slots.

I got a reply from 4ms/Dann about customization, etc., and he said the artwork and finish is fully customizable, he can extend the voltage range, which is nominally -5v/5v to whatever I'd need, put in a banana grounding jack, and can even build it into a 6u 19" rack unit.
Roycie Roller
Ah, awesome! So you reckon you'll grab one? Dann is top notch- i just received their Triwave Picogenerator & Noise Swash kits. I'm building them both into one big panel- it's going to have 30 knobs & 15 switches! (more if i cross bend the circuits). I'm going to see if i can give it cv control to modularize it, but it'll be a crazy audio frequency generator as is!
I would be very interested to hear what kind of applications you use the Bend Matrix for with your modular...I might grab one of them in the near future.
cebec
Yeah, I think I'm gonna. I'll need to wait a bit until I can afford it but this is definitely an exciting prospect. I already have some applications in mind and I'll be sure to keep you updated.
Incidentally, I was always interested in the Triwave and Noise Swash, as well. Whether you're able to give them CV control or not, I'd love to hear the results.
wetterberg
so let me ask you: is the main intriguing bit the ability to patch with buttons like that? Or is it that random/glitch/"Seq" stuff? Or both?
The Synapse is definitely due for a revival, right? smile

For me, it's both. I also think that the ability to store and recall patch routings at the touch of a button or via MIDI (from Max, for example) is especially useful in a performance context. As far as I can tell, this'll serve as banana to 1/4" converter to provide me with additional outputs to my audio interface, as well.

Here's the Synapse, for those who haven't seen it. Boy, I'd love to find one...

please let us know how it goes! I'm very interested in the picogenerator!
Roycie Roller
Yep, definitely. I might even take a series of photos to document the process and post them in the other Triwave/Swash thread. And also some mp3's to show what it can do.
I went to the tip today & found a black metal box, about 4" deep, 21" long, & 14" wide. It has a nice sloped angled- it's a perfect enclosure & cost just $2 dollars! I love recycling!
I also picked up a couple of photoresistors which i'm considering building into the circuit so it's like a crude version of Roland's D-Beam or something...
I'll start on it in the next day or so.

Is anyone using the Bend Matrix with their modular? Having the ability to cycle through patches seems pretty useful, especially for live performance.

Just started building one with exactly this in mind.

I'm working on a custom Bend Matrix with trigger outs for each column. Should be done soon, I'll post pics and video when it is.

Killer, I would love to see that.
Kent
I've been eyeing this thing since it does what the Buchla 210e router will not do in a couple of ways and doesn't require changing a full preset state on the 200e.

I'd love to see the builds that you guys are doing.

Do any users find the center-detent pots to be a must?
I am thinking about using some smooth BI pots like MOTM instead.

For those who have done the trigger input mod,
did you build it on proto-board or...?
I wish there was a little daughter PCB for this.

I still need to hunt down a few chips,
but it is getting much closer to completion.

Here is another related thread:

Yeah its massive!

The commonsound kits looks great but I havent done any kits yet, so it wouldnt make any sense...it would be cool on a 6u!
glia
this thing is so weird
Cat-A-Tonic
This is finally nearing completion.
It's still missing a few chips.

I'm curious how many of you have successfully used this for CV or video signals.
None of the YouTube videos show this,
and although the documentation says it's capable of all that
I've read of at least one person that said their BM didn't work with CV.
Perhaps the builder AC coupled it...

Some of the chips I am using are faster versions of the ones specified in the docs.
Apparently those are obsolete now.

I used the best 3.5mm jacks, the best 1/4" jacks, very nice BI pots,
and a hand stamped panel for my build.

I've got the wood cut for the custom case.
