Pls Read: UploadPic vs Image Attachment

Post by Muff Wiggler » Thu Mar 26, 2015 11:02 am

To prevent the forum's width from stretching out too wide, the uploadpic tool now resizes any larger image down to 1024x768

"But what if I don't want my image resized?"

Glad you asked! In that case don't use "uploadpic" - instead use the "attachment" function. The original size of your image will be retained, but it won't be displayed in-line in the rendering of a thread, instead a link will be presented that opens the image in its full-sized glory on a new page, without fuxoring with the width of the forum thread.

Hooray for choice!

Thank you for fixing this! Those inline 4k images were driving me nuts before!

Ooh... I wish every forum had this feature. Just posted my first photos and that was pretty darn handy!

Try uploading a file. You will see that the restrictions are listed during the process.

Use the ‘upload pic’ feature.

With recent changes, has the upload pic option disappeared? I can’t figure out how to do it anymore. There are only a bunch of little icons and none of them seem to do it.

Long story short; yes.

PHPBB 3.2 adds a lot of media embedding options, as you've seen, but did away with the image upload.

I just tried to install an extension that re-enabled it, but that broke everything in a bad way. So that's gone now.
The only other such extension I see is Image Upload which actually uploads your image to a third-party hosting site.
If that seems desirable, let me know and I'll install it, but at that point why not just use the existing media embedding tools?

You can use the Add Attachment button - and then place the image inline once it's loaded. Seems to work pretty well, although I had one instance where i had to resize the image to get it to work.

What about quoting a post with a picture in it; how do you make the picture appear in the quote?

It can be done, but not by default, which is probably a good thing. The amount of people who repost a post with a picture or pictures just to add a brief comment is really irksome to some of us.

How you do it: right click on the image you want to have in the quoted post, copy the url of the picture. Then, press the quote thingie on the top right of said post - it'll bring up an edit window with the quoted post. Replace the little image title text with the url you just copied. Wrap image tags around that (using the little box of mountains and sun tool icon top leftish-middleish. Then the image will show up. You'll have to redo this for each image if there are multiple images. It's kind of tedious, but at least it'll make people think about reposting longcat a little.

Thanks! Yes you're right, it certainly sounds quite tedious.

So what's up with inline image attachment? I tried it with the new interface on this post
viewtopic.php?f=16&t=229433&p=3228695#p3228695
and wound up with two copies of each image.

Took some snaps on my iPhone. Rotated them on the iPhone. Transferred to PC and orientation is correct. Uploaded as attachment they are all sideways and upside down.
