Guess the thingy

Post by plord » Tue Aug 05, 2008 9:05 pm

I have a device here, whose manual says, verbatim

"Using an electric guitar instead of a keyboard will cause a great deal of trouble."

Any guesses? More clues will be coming (although several obvious clues are, well, stupidly obvious), including audio, assuming I can get the thing to do the thing that it does :)

Not a PLL, note the forum this was posted under.

Although, you can get a module from Blacet, Doepfer, or Modcan that will do ONE of the things this thingy will do. It's the OTHER thing this thingy can do that I'm trying to figure out.

Getting it to do this other thing it does-- so mysterious, eh?-- WILL probably involve the modular, at least a mixer, multiple, gate source, sequencer, and square wave source.

Another few hints: Japanese. Made in the 80s. Abused by a particular group in the late 90s, using "that other trick that it does".

We have a winner!

I've been about two hours fiddling with the thing to try and get "fractal patterns" out of it by feeding the pitch squarewave, "plus a little resonance" back into the input. I suspect you need to use the auto-record sampler setting for this to work, but if anybody knows the trick, I'm all ears :)

*Strange* box even if it won't do the thing. Sending it pitch data while it is in Delay mode is glitchy and nasty and fun. It wants to distort on the input too easily, have to tame that; but so far it's given me some strange ring moddy sounds and the occasional Whale song...no idea where it interpreted that bass content, I'm triggering it with pretty high notes.

Anyway, fun! :)

What band abused it in the 90s?

Autechre. They drove it with a TR-606 as a trigger for the sampler, then sent a resonant square wave into the pitch tracking input (the resonance makes the pitch less stable) and also mixed it into the input (or turned up the overdub, this is one of the many ways in which existing descriptions of the technique is unclear).

The web says this can create "fractal patterns". I'm not getting that yet :)

That's a bit vague to be honest, what they did was never "fractal"-based with this delay. Just nice and semi-random :hyper:
