What drum machine did you use on this track? Or are the drum sounds made with your modular?
Any pic's of your setup?

BTW again a nice track!

Hello! Thanks so much for taking the time to listen. I've enjoyed many of your pieces as well.

The last year or so, most of the drum sounds I've been making are a combination of used Jomox table top drum modules (2 Mbase 11, 2 Mbrane 11), a Reon R triggered by CVIO, some sounds are made with CCs per step and a Blofeld table top, some stock samples from an Akai MPX8 sample pad. I've been over recording drum parts lately using a Volka Beats that I added midi out to, making basic drums using the Volka as a "pocket calaculator" and then recording the midi with the Cirklon, a lot of times recording over parts several times, which tends to make some really strange sounding parts. After over recording, editing and expanding by hand. Another technique is to change things on the Blofeld and Jomox drums on each step with CCs and PGM changes. Also programming more than one part and creating race conditions on the monosynths with more than one midi instruction per step using CK (poly where all kinds of things might happen) or P3 patterns. It all adds up to some glitchy sounds.

I haven't started putting together a modular yet. I've been on a tight budget for a couple of years, so I have sort of been avoiding modules. Eventually I'd like to put a system together when money is not so tight :>)

Here's a picture of things from the last several pieces ... A few of the drums are buried inside of the bottom rack.

aha, I see you have a Cirklon too! This is in my opinion the best sequencer ever.
Anyway, I'm a little confused with your description above. Do you do everything in Midi and than record it in a one track?
I'm really curious to your workflow as i like the progress, the built up of your songs.
How does one do overrecording on a cirklon?

Nice setup BTW.

The Cirklon is one of the coolest things I've ever come across in life. Top 20 at least! It makes real time composition / live sequencing so much more flexible for me. I like it so much, I'm trying to buy another one.

So I do a lot of midi parts yes. I do some CV for the Reon Drift R, which stands there in the picture on the table in the bottom left corner in front of the racks. That does most of the modular types of sounds as well as bass and drum sounds too sometimes. The other modular type sounds tend to come from the Moog CP-251, Clusterflux and noise (multi-oscillator / CV) boxes with the white knobs.

The last few pieces, I've been using the Volka Beats with midi out to write basic drum patterns and I sometimes over record them by allowing the loop in record mode on the Cirklon to repeat a number of times. I'm guessing that since the Volka has some latency by the end of the midi signal's destination to the Cirklon internally, it causes the notes to overwrite or be written slightly offset from the original pattern on the first loop. It doesn't always work, but sometimes it makes for some cool effects. I also sometimes run a pattern and then at the beginning of the recording loop, start a new one and let it write over the top of the first. This works in a CK sometimes. You can pre-adjust the length of the pattern to be recorded by placing the Cirklon in record mode while in a CK, then hit "menu", and then use the encoder underneath "loop" to set the length. If you don't like the tail of the pattern when finished, rather than edit it by hand, you can just readjust the length by decreasing the length by one etc.

Sometimes I will copy and paste a pattern into a new track and then edit it profusely by hand and leave the original intact, sometimes repeatedly, then layer while mixing / performing. When this works, it makes things sound very real to me sometimes. One piece has what sounds like bottles clanking together in a subtle breeze.

By letting the Volka (or other bad clock) be the clock for these types of pre-constructed patterns, you can get some cool subtle chaos going. Then of course you can edit live as you roll, or edit further before performance / recording.

I mostly build pieces on the fly though. This over recording thing was an accident recently while experimenting with different devices that have midi out and can be programmed / sequenced in various ways. I originally intended to use the Volka beats for writing parts when out and about on the town. It uses batteries, so if I have a basic beat idea, I can write parts, then transfer them rapidly to the Cirklon via midi later. Sort of like a "pocket calculator" rather than using a Desktop computer to do the math. I'd like to find an even smaller device that would do the same thing. I'm sure there are many. Actually the Yamaha MU5 I have will run on batteries and has midi out. Lots of drums too (rotten sounding!).

I don't touch the audio mixers much. I let the Cirklon adjust volumes through velocity and CCs / PGM changes. With the "A" encoder, you can adjust velocities as you write them in a CK. That makes things go very rapidly while composing live.

For a recording coming up, rather than just make pieces in real time while playing live to 2 track, I plan to mix the 2 approaches together and ultimately record live as usual. I thought about multi-tracking, and eventually I might, but I really love getting the odd sounds, and part of that is not knowing what will happen next (if anything). Sometimes pieces sound terrible too. I post them anyway, because later they may grow on me and people tend to like things that I don't for their own reasons.

Anyhow, I hope this isn't too much info. I'm trying to exercise restraint! For a person who can barely see things correctly, I tend to run on and on and go too fast for many even in text :>)

I love the Oakley stuff BTW .. Nice looking modular for sure. Someday soon I'll build one too.
