not especially original but there's something very fun about FMing a couple of oscillators and throwing it all through a low pass gate.

a low pass gate is basically a VCA and/or filter (they can be used as either one or both at the same time) that uses vactrols. the vactrols help impart a particular quality to the sound that goes through the low pass gate due to the way they respond to control voltages (i think - if i'm way off the mark somebody put me right!) - think "classic" Buchla type "woody" sounds.
