Hi, I'm looking for the old school YM3812 sound chip in modular format.
Adlib/soundblaster sound stuff!

Has this been done?

Not YM3812, but YM262 (OPL3, hence even better)

A few months ago, I dove into the YM2413datasheet with the idea of making either a "module" or dedicated keyboard that used the chip to its full potential. The external circuitry involved seems pretty straightforward - a microcontroller with some analog inputs more or less. Ultimately I decided that I lack the programming skills to do it right so the project is on the back burner for now...

The first keyboard I ever had was based around the 3812. At the time I didn't know anything about synthesizers (or other gear really), but I would spend hours fiddling with the slide switches to figure out every possible timbre.
I would love to see more projects using those FM chips! They have so much potential.

I just ordered some smile

I built a MIDI driven module in the 80's with one of the FM chips *, based on one of the Commodore 64 FM synth add-ons. I had to reverse engineer from the code provided with the add-on (pre internet, Yamaha didn't publish any chip specs!). It has a home-brew 6502 processor card (emulating the C-64 architecture) driving it. Must dig it out.

Now , if anyone has a 6502 to PIC (or any other "modern" processor) cross assembler handy ????

Edit * YM3526

incidentally, the other day i've received a prototype panel for this hyper low priority project (opl3, which i had laying around forever)...

lots of menu diving to hand edit presets and the only CV control is the pitch - it's exactly how I would not want to do it smile

Is this design or boards available? Sorry, I know it's an old post.

Just ordered board/panel/chip for the one mentioned above and featured in this thread. Looking forward to it!

Thank you! Guess I should have searched the IC more! I was at the store earlier and completely missed the board/panel/chip option.

in theory yes (in as much the hardware is done), in practice not so much (= the firmware is still (still) in a very rudimentary state)
Grumble
