Catch Me If You Can

Post by MrDys » Thu Sep 11, 2008 12:03 am

So-named because it reminds me of John Williams' score for the movie of the same name. Has a brassy/clarinet timbral quality to it. This is one of my favorite patches that I've done so far (though, that always seems to be case, eh?).

Patch is relatively simple. Oscillator is an ELF LFO saw with some syncing from another ELF LFO saw. Quantized Random Voltages is picking the pitches (boy I can't wait until my Modcan quantizer comes in...). It's being LPG'd in a M13 by a mix out of a A143-1 complex envelope generator (which is also clocking the QRV). All of that is being LPG'd by the env out of a A142 Voltage Controlled Gate, with the gate length randomly picked by the bottom half of the QRV. The A142 is being triggered by random 16ths, triplets, and dotted eighths from a Flame Clockwork. A Z5000 adds a touch of reverb at the end.

I like the brassy nature of the sound. Reminds me of a sleezy tenor sax. :)

I was thinking Ornette Coleman or Anthony Braxton sober.

Man I love Love Supreme, I'm too young to have seen Coltrane live, but I got to see Elvin Jones play last year, shook his hand. Damn what a grip!

How do you get that excellent brassy timber?
Just 2 Elf LFOs in synch thru a low pass gate?
That easy? Damn it sounds good.

After the low pass gate, it's going into a M12 with all 4 outputs into a polarizing mixer. There's no resonance applied, and it's really only to smooth out some of the buzzier aspects of the saws. Kind of a half-assed vactrol EQ.
